We are planning on converting the spare bedroom into an office, have always worked on dining room table fine, but with kids here all the time it just isn’t going to work long term.
We have nowt, so desk, chair recommendations welcome, plus any other stuff that makes a sorted home office,
Post pics if you are particularly proud of yours 😉
Human scale diffrient world chair. Love mine. Combined with a nice glass desk from John Lewis but that’s an indulgence. Get your chair right and the rest will follow.
If you’re using a laptop then get a mouse and keyboard. Then raise the laptop so the screen is at eye level. There are loads of little platforms to do it but make sure it’s for a laptop and not a monitor.
Separation will be more important than anything else.
If the door is shut, the children stay out. Door shut = Work.
They, and you, need to learn the boundaries.
That aside, unless your in it for the long term (beyond current circs) a cheapo desk and a half decent chair is enough for now.
I'm a home worker. Been doing it for a couple of years now.
If you're using a laptop, I'd really recommend a separate monitor, especially if using spreadsheets.
A separate keyboard and proper mouse too
Proper keyboard, mouse & monitor (or laptop riser if you can't stretch to that).
I really like my Aeron chair, but even secondhand is was silly expensive. That said, it's 5 years old, as good as the day I bought it and I could probably sell it for what I paid for it.
If you haven't got much depth to your desk, make a shelf to go across the back to put your monitor or laptop on. Ikea do some kitchen cabinet feet you can use https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/capita-leg-stainless-steel-10267895/
If your work offer it, do their ergonomic training.
Like my Ikea Bekant desk. Really deep and adjustable legs.
The Range do decent good value chairs, go for the gaming ones. Comfier and they last twice as long.
Dont forget the blackout blinds and leds.

Also, don't cheap out on the conference call headset. You can wear HyperX Clouds all day and music sounds great.
Just for work of course.
Oh dont forget a Havit mechanical keyboard. Your fingers will thank you.
I bought a decent size dell monitor and us3 a wireless keyboard and mouse with a docking station. Helps loads. Decent chair as well and like someone said, a door!
Thanks guys, yes separation is going to be key, the boys (2 & 4) hear me talk so burst in to see what’s going on. And I’m finding when I get up for a break I’m straight into dad mode rather than actually having 5 mins to myself.
I see why people have an office in the garden now, always though it was weird. No time or space to go that far. Back room, should be enough out of the way to be able to at least sneak out into our bedroom without the monsters downstairs hearing
I like the sniper work setup 😉
I can second the recommendation for the IKEA desk. I've got the corner version of what they used to sell before the bekant. It takes a lot of room but then it is a proper office sized desk and it has stood up to 15 years of constant use, including dismantling and reassembling several times. If you have the space, I'd say to get as close to a professional setup as you can. The cost might seem a lot but if this goes on till next year, it will have been worth it
Another vote for the IKEA bekant (used to be called galant) desks. They do loads of different sizes and even sit/stand desks.
This is mine, I can shut the door and be left alone. As we're moving to split teams, one week wfh and one week in the office alternating, I'll be ordering a 34" UW monitor this week to go along with my 24" monitor. Working in IT, a single monitor just doesn't cut it!
