Im starting a new job on Monday and will be working from home for a very small consultancy (me and one other who is based quite a considerable distance from me geographically). I have my own PC which is adequate for the role but it only has 255GB SSD hard drive so I will not be able to use this to store the bulk of the files i'll be saving and generating.

Im used to working from a server so need to understand what the best process is for saving locally and then uploading over cloud storage.

Ive purchased a 1TB SSD portable drive to directly save files into to save filling up the machines internal SSD but Im not sure if there is the best way to go.

Is there any sort of cost effective remote server that we could both work from or would we pay through the nose for this kind of set up?

Office 365 small business?

As well as 1tb per user cloud storage, has some collaboration tools you may find handy.

For a consultancy I would have though it ideal, especially for sharing with you clients as well, it will be the most compatible solution for most businesses you aso work with.

+1 for Office 365. Other solutions are available but it works very well.

Office 365 or Google. Both can be set up so that everything is in the cloud - actually Google doesn't give you much choice, it's cloud-native.

What software will you be using? How big are the files really likely to be?

"Really" large files require some serious kit for it to work in any reasonable way. Even fast normal domestic broadband struggles with video files for example, especially as upload is usually a fraction of the download speed.

Does the company have an IT department, or support contract with external company? The company I work for is very small, but thankfully outsource the IT to a pretty competent outfit.
