A few years ago I asked this question. Ended up buying one of the recommendations (no idea which one, can't find the name on it!)- it's been fine but it's pretty tired now and I'm probably going to up the budget a bit. But not Herman Miller money- £500 max.

Does get hot in the workshed, so mesh would be good, want armrests, lumbar adjustment would be good, looking for something that encourages better posture. Happy to go 2nd hand if reputable firm. So much choice out there and not a lot of agreement from review sites (other than spend a grand on HM) so as ever STW, do your stuff!

I wouldn’t trust anything that comes from the Home Office. At the moment they are managing to stifle dissent against Ministerial Statements using an arcane part of legislation from the 1600’s.

I would use your own judgement rather than rely on advice from them, not to be trusted!

Ah hah- that looks like what i have. We bought 3 I think from a 2nd hand place. All the armrests have split and are currently taped up and I'm not a massive fan of the everything moving when you lean back.

Meant to say, I tried the lads gaming chair (which from memory @cougar recommended) but it's not really for me.

In true STW "ignore most of the question and suggest what you have instead" fashion - Secret Labs.

I've been suffering with upper back / shoulder pains since like the mid-90s, on a bad day it felt like someone had rammed a knife up behind my shoulder blade. I always attributed it to (genetic) bad posture, my dad had the same gait. The only thing I found which offered temporary relief was rock climbing.  I put a chin-up bar across my bedroom doorway, not to "keep fit" or "work out" particularly, but to dangle from on days where I couldn't get out.

Moving house in 2020 I built a new home office and treated myself to a new chair.  It wasn't cheap but I figured it's like buying a bed - you spend a third of your life in it so it's worth getting something half decent.  And... the problem went away, I've been pain-free for like four years now.

That has reminded me I should really get the chin-up bar installed. Thank you!

@cougar - that's a glowing recommendation tho! I've had a look at the website, really good info on the chairs. I can probably do without the Batman themed one although 😉 I am tempted by the Titan. If only for being such an OTT name for a chair 🙂

I believe their range has changed since I got mine but back when I bought it the "Titan" was the XXL version.  I tested a mate's before buying one, I said "it's really comfy but it's just too damn big."  He replied "yeah, I bought the large version."  Sold.

Mine's an Omega.  I went with the fake leather version as a compromise between price and owning three cats.

You could pick up a nice used Herman Miller Aeron for £500 in peak Covid madness, looking at eBay now they seem to start at around £350 (buy it now).

Aerons didn't work for my back anyway.

HAG Capisco - available at various prices depending on how much polished alu and leather you need in your life.

Or check other options at Back in Action (I used the Bristol branch, very helpful).

@dorset_knob, I've been looking for an excuse to go to Bristol, it's only an hour away so might give that a go. Be good to sit in some chairs/get some advice before buying.

It's not. What you asked but what works for me.

Standing desk. Comfy pad to stand on. I have an IKEA wobbly stool which I use to perch a knee on to change position every so often.

You can go HM without going full Aeron. I couldn't quite stomach the prices for those, so I bought a Mirra instead. It's really very good and secondhand prices seem to be from about £200 to £450 for a refurb one.

I was just going to recommend the same. Clearly not an office chair, though 🙂

FWIW I use an IKEA chair, one of the more expensive ones. Seems OK so far although it is lacking in lumbar adjustment. But given the above mentioned sit-stand desk, it's not that critical.

If the quality of the the 'wood' furniture is anything to go by I think I'd avoid IKEA!
