Hi folks,

Where is the worth checking out for home Insurance with bike cover at the moment. The ones we have looked at have max cycle cover of £500 at the moment. Currently we are with Nationwide but the renewal has come in £££££.

Cheers

Halifax, Aviva. Barclays used to be great too. Not sure now.

Barclays ended theirs, it's just Aviva now (they provided the Barclays insurance anyway).

I've just (yesterday) swapped to Aviva.

Can cover bikes up to £5000.

Was with Axa but they put my premium up by £600 because of  a £600 claim for damaged contents, so jumped. They might be worth looking at too,

Most do have a £500 limit unless you insure bikes as specified items. Confused.com put me with quotemehappy - they have a "Pedal cycles upgrade": all bikes insured up to a max value - after a discussion on here, also checked and they are insured in a separate building (detached garage) and away from home.
Just do a price comparison.

I ended up splitting contents and buildings between Tesco(!) and Aviva - and save a couple of hundred quid. The renewal is October, so lets see what occurs this year...

I haven’t signed up yet but got a quote through Pedal Cover the other day for buildings, contents and bike. You get a discount if you’re a cycling uk member. They’re happy to insure electric bikes and I didn’t hit up against any max value problems.

I have mine covered with NFU. They seemed the cheapest I could find. Might be worth a call. Bonne chance

Oooh, I'd spent ages shopping around and just written off Pedal Cover on the basis that anyone bike specialist is ALWAYS more expensive. But Pedal Cover is actually best quote I've had, even more so after discount.

Anyone had any experiences of them. Who underwrites it?

Pedal cover was a go to on here for years, previously it was M&S.  Then Pedal Cover went completely the other way and became pretty hopeless for bike cover.  Perhaps they're back now?  Interested to hear what max value they have - Hannah suggested there wasn't a top limit?

£10k single limit on the standard policy, £15k on the premium policy.
£25k/£50k total bike value.

Pedal cover only insure up to your receipt. So if your bike is stolen and is a few years old you will be out of pocket if you want to get back to where you were. Other companies it is new for old.

put your bokes on your policy as specified items, most insurers will look at but some may limit to c £5K. in the past few years i've been with e-sure, LV and now with Halifax

would of stayed with e-sure as were very cheap, but following a claim they imposed several over the top conditions, LV cover was very good but c 50% rate increase at renewal a couple of months ago so moved to halifax

Pedal Cover are competitive with pricing again (I'm currently with them, not made a claim though), however be aware there is a requirement in the policy T&Cs that you have to have proof of the bike value (original invoice, credit card statement maybe), self-valuing isn't accepted. I queried that as don't have invoices still for some of my older bikes (and couldn't get bank statement copies over 7 years old), I asked if I could just get them valued by a bike shop and provide that as evidence but was told no. As a result I won't be renewing next year (I stuck with them this time as needed something in place quickly and my more expensive bikes I do have invoices for so took the risk). Not sure how common that requirement is for other insurers were bike cover is involved?

That’s interesting about Pedalcover and the proof of value being required.
I’ll have to look in to this when I renew as I’ve been using them for quite a long time now. Previously they’ve been pretty good on price and I had an accident claim for a bike and kit through them a few years back and they were very good, paid out on the value of the damaged parts on the hoe with no proof of purchase required and it was all pain-free.
I’ll definitely be looking elsewhere in future if they’ve changed their t&c’s.

T&Cs that you have to have proof of the bike value

They will, in the absence of proof, give you current 2nd hand value (their valuation), which given current 2nd hand values, may not be a great deal.

Yeah, the Pedal Cover proof requirement is all a bit confusing. The bit I objected to was the Section 4 (Pedal Cycles) Exclusion:

We won't pay a pedal cycle claim if:
you cannot provide the original receipts for your:
– pedal cycle or cycle accessory
showing the date, price paid, details of items, name and address of a seller

When I queried this the reply was:

In the event of a claim we would require proof of purchase, we can accept multiple forms such as receipts/invoices, email confirmations, bank/card statements etc.
We wouldn’t accept an independent value, however we can do agreed values but this would be based on the current second hand market value so it is usually in your best interest to source the proof of purchase where possible.
We also wouldn’t be able to do agreed values if you have no proof of purchase for any items in your collection, its more an option for those who are missing some receipts.

So as nickc says, I could still claim the secondhand value but that's a tiny fraction of the amount I have valued them as (which was their new value).

I have had my Orange 5 and Camino insured as identified bikes for four years with Esure within my home and contents insurance.

Regretfully both got nicked 5 weeks ago and I had a full payout minus excess within a week (Old for New)

Two new bikes (now in the house) and I'm back on the road / trails and other than the violation of having two great bikes stollen I'm a very happy lad.

For information the Camino was insured for £1,500.00 and the 5 for £4,500.00

Regarding receipts, I was unable to provide a receipt for the Orange 5, images of me using the bike were sufficient to satisfy them.

Last time I got a quote from Pedalcover (a few years ago) theft claims from an outbuilding/shed were limited to £5000 but garages up to £75000. This annoyed me as my shed is essentially a concrete sectional garage but without a big door on the front for a car, it just has a side door but they classed it as a shed.

Cheers folks,

After checking out the recommendations above we had a phone call with Nationwide and ended up staying with them.

Just gone with Nationwide as well, £200 all in, bikes covered outside provided locked.

(Un)amusing footnote: asked my existing insurer to quote for covering my bikes, and they wouldn't cover it. And then they wouldn't un-exist the bikes. I couldn't choose just to not have them covered, their mere existence was enough for them to drop me. Weird. Anyway, now with Pedal Sure and carefully compiling a list of old invoices etc.
