Just because this stuff comes up so regularly and the search facility is so pants I thought I'd type it out.
Heat on me last night insuring the house and contents just before that puff of wind got here. Someone let the old policy lapse........can't imagine who.
Anyway last night I went with Nationwide. Seemed ok. Then I read the schedule fine print this morning and regardless of the additional bikes you named (and paid extra for) the max value theft of the contents of outbuildings was £5K. Confirmed with online chat that this included the bikes, even though they were listed as £10K+ on their own before chainsaws and all the other 'stuff'.
I'm now with M&S with their standard cover - £50,000 limit from outbuildings. I could have gone premium and got that up to £100K. And confirmed via call that bikes are good to go in outbuildings provided it's locked and no need to individually lock them down etc etc. And unlimited bikes covered upto the value of the most expensive one you have listed. And still £50 cheaper than Nationwide.
So...I hope.....M&S which over the years went from bike geek insurer of choice to persona non grata, I think/hope it is a good choice again.
£740 bleeding quid mind all up and that was one of the cheapest quotes I've had. Old insurer (quote me happy) wanted to double last years up to £1350 for no reason so they got in the sea...then I forgot about it....and got to sit on the naughty step.
M&S recently here for us too. It saved me £200 as i can not renew the insurance on the Session now as that's just classed as 1 of the bikes.... So the policy almost paid for itself.
I'm with Nationwide and due for renewal so will have a look at M&S, thanks!
(Bikes are not 5k though... but still worth a look.)
Do they also insure the bike when away from the house? It's a big reason I have Nationwide in the first place, I can lock it up at the shop with any old lock and it's insured.
Who underwrites M&S now?
Eek! That's more than double what we pay. Built-in garage rather than outbuildings though. That must make quite a difference.
Sounds like the same level of cover for bikes that I have with Aviva (via Quote Me Happy), but jeez, it's nowhere near £700!! Under £200 for buildings & contents IIRC
(My garage is separate from the house)
Yes M&S are Aviva too.
This is a detached 3 bed in a rural bit of the highlands. Worth about £300k so no mansion. A bit peeved I seem to have to pay so much. Might be our ancient crappy locks....or a bit of rural theft currently upping the premium.
Wow. We just paid £350 with £10k limit on outbuildings with More Than. Bit tight on value for me but i just spent £150 on sold secure gold floor anchors and locks.
if its gonna go its gonna go and they’ll keep coming back knowing its insured but figured to get through the ground anchor and the mastif locks will take enough effort to disturb a neighbour. Hopefully!
bikes are always an insurance problem. A) getting insurance and b) being honest about the value will disclose how much money has been diverted away from the joint funds before she sees it!
