The house next door to us was broken into a couple of days ago, nothing taken really but they made a mess of the place and my wife was home alone at the time. She's now worrying about staying at home when I go away.

We're looking at cctv but not sure what good it'll do, looking for advice on best security/deterrents really.

Ton is your guy for this.
He recommended a set up for me for my new shop, and it is perfect and was very easy to install.
It’s certainly harder to run cables through proper houses, but I’d PM him for advice.

I use Nest cameras - one in the Garage and one at the front door. They took about a minute to install and you can remote view through the app. They cost a few quid but worth it for the piece of mind AFAIC.

I went with 4 wired cameras and a 'recorder' but it depends upon how easy it is for you to wire in if keeping costs down. Mine is a Lorex 4 camera system, came with two cameras but bought 2 extra Swann cameras when on offer (Maplin at the time). Remote access etc. We use it to see if my son has left the house for college !

I was able to get all sides of my property covered with 3 of the camera's wiring easy to do (i.e. within a building and short runs), only the front door cam needed some more planning.

Nest etc far easier to sort, but that bit more. Ours stores around two weeks of footage, with 'movement' shown as a different colour. The local fox is a cheeky git !

PS most scum bags are well aware of cameras, and carry on regardless - just pull their hoods up.

Other stuff like security lights etc help - i.e. no where to 'hide'.

Hikvision IP systems are the way to go. If you call a decent installer it's what they'll be wanting to install.
Opt for the the proper trade level, Pro range rather than the Hilook - Hiwatch consumer grade, sub-brand stuff.

IP, so easy to install either running cat5 or distributed via switches, WiFi bridges etc.
Plenty of camera models and 4K options at a fair price too.

Remote viewing, playback via app, PC etc and highly configurable event alarm notifications etc.

You should consider where you can put the cameras so they can't be got at and what they can capture when they are there.

Do you have an alarm system? You can set perimeter alarms or a downstairs zone for use when you're home. They're not just for use when you're out (and that's probably when they're of least use!)

After a bit of digging another neighbour who has cctv has them on camera in his garden but they're all covered so bugger all use really. Kind of thinking that sensors that turn on internal lights may be the best way of trying to make them think twice? Have Hue lights in living room so could use outdoor sensor to trigger these to turn on?

Have a look at Ring. Lights, camera, motion sensor, alarm, microphone & night vision & recording are available on the same item. All you need is a power supply & wifi. I've 3 (installed after some scrotes tried to get into my garage) & they are easy to setup & pretty flawless.

Got Ring camera in back garden, means you get a notification if it detects movement and then you can set an alarm off. Mostly it works as a cat detector.

Motion detection, as mentioned above is a very basic feature of a modern cctv relying on any change in pixels, can be triggered by anything as simple changes in light.
I recommended the Hik system, these are a lot more advanced with smart features such as line crossing and intrusion detection which can be fine tuned by marking multiple, specific zones with adjustments for sensitivity and max, min size of object required to trigger to quite effectively reduce the amount of false alerts.
There are also object removal, left baggage, face detection, etc modes but maybe more suited to a public environment rather than domestic.

I've successfully managed to filter out atleast 90% of cat alarms on mine and clocking the postie, DPD guy without fail.

Last thing you want if the system is to provide comfort for your wife is a system crying wolf all the time.

I agree that cameras alone aren't a deterrent.

I think a Nest cam which triggers Hue lights to come on inside and out and then this alarm blaring out will do the job. 🙂

Yes any decent system would have alarm triggers,
I also thought about putting the Peter Kay clip on one of these https://www.voiceoff.com/ 😁
