What carpet/felt material do you use to trim the exposed metal bits inside your converted van, and where from? I want to the the driver's side of my van bulkhead. It's black painted steel at the moment.

Any good fitting the tutorials anywhere?

4 way stretch carpet from somewhere like megavanmats and high temp spray adhesive.

What phil said. Make sure you get the high temp adhesive.

What they said. I still have PTSD from doing the wheel arches *shudder*

I used megavanmats carpet + glue on my van and it still looked good nearly 11 years later when I sold my van on.

I think carpet lining is a summer job though - you need all the ventilation you can get...

I quite enjoyed doing the wheel arches!

+1 for megavanmats. Warmer weather is better for the gluing though.

Just in case you’re thinking of putting a heater in, you can buy diesel eberspacher copies off eBay for about £150 these days, great bits of kit, especially this time of year.

No, it's a proper van, not a camper so unless the heater was actually in the cabin there wouldn't be much benefit. I just want to cover the vast expanse of steel bulkhead, which may have the secondary benefit of making it even a bit quieter.

Veltrim as an alternative to the 4 way stretch stuff - it's a bit stiffer and less fluffy, but otherwise very similar. Either is a piece of piss to fit with the right glue (the carpet goes slightly soft when you spray it with glue so it is easy to work it around curves). Both of them have a right side and a wrong side which isn't easy to spot at first.

You can buy bundles of carpet with the appropriate adhesive on ebay. I used this lot:

...but it's available from loads of places.

If you don't want it to look like a bassbin and to feel nice get quality car trim cloth. I've got Alcantara suede in my van and it is good to look at and to the touch.

tthew, if you want to make a really nice job of it, get some of the 5mm foam with a sticky back and silver front. Stick across bulkhead for warmth and sound deadening, and then spray adhesive your carpet on top. If you have lots of ridges in the bulkhead the foam may unstick so just cut strips and fill these first to create a flat bulkhead.
