Myself and the better half are looking at heading to the alps, Switzerland for a week in May/June for a holiday. Unfortuantely i dont think i will be taking the bike but we will be hiking and generally sight seeing. Never been before so was looking for reommendations of places/companies etc.
Has anyone got any recommendations?
Thanks
Where in Switzerland? May is pretty quiet in most places. Some places are starting to wake up in June, but depending on where you are there is still plenty to do.
I have no idea yet i was just looking for recommendations at this point as im not sure where to go. Scenery is amust and a little bit of a night life would also be good
Thanks
If youre after scenery, sight seeing, hiking then the Jungfrau region has to be on your list to research.
Staying wise there are option from Interlaken (down in the Valley between the two lakes) upto Lauterbrunnen (my favourite) and Grindelwald if you want to have a car with you. If not you can try Wengen and Murren up the hill for hotels and guest houses that you get to via train or cable car!
Theres no end of scenery to take in and hiking to do.
I cant see it being the most energetic of nightlife in May/June however the Horner Pub in Lauterbrunnen always has a few Skydiver type people going in for a beer in the evenings. If you are looking at the Campsites in Lauterbrunnen these both have bars too and are popular with backpackers so might have a few people in.
Don't know about nightlife as we've never been before but we're heading to Lauterbrunnen in July/Aug for part of our family hol. Google some images and you'll get the idea.....
Dknwhy - did I sway it for you on the other thread then!? They should give me a job with the tourist board! 😆
we had a great couple of weeks touring in Switzerland and Northern Italy, as said before Luaderbrennan (sp) is very nice and close to all the action but we stayed in Pontresina near St Moritz too which was lovely and quiet. Also close to the National Park which was nice, was only looking at the maps and photos the other night : )
I'd second Pontrasina or Celerina. Check out the Mortoratsch glacier, and take a hike over Bernina Pass. Some good biking there too.
Also well worth checking out is Bettmeralp. The lifts above the town won't be open but it's a nice hike up to the lookout point for Aletsch Glacier and then hike along the length of the Glacier either towards Riederalp or Fiescheralp. The area is a Unesco world heritage site and well worth visiting. Not sure how many hotels will be open there in May, but everything will start to open again in Early June.
The nightlife thing is going to be rubbish in any touristy areas. You'll need to go to the cities to have any activity in the evenings.
