So I’m attending some dog training in Tavistock and being as it’s pretty far away I’m thinking of booking a week off work and spending the week down there. Trouble is I’ve only visited Devon once before and I’ve no idea where would be good as a base to explore from.

Needs to have places to walk the dog
Needs to be an area suitable for my older friend at nearly 70 to enjoy. So maybe a nice village and places for lunches, no mega walks as she’s had a knee replacement so isn’t a walker. Interesting things to visits, maybe castles.
Not mega busy but it’ll be first week in March so doubtful to be hoards anyway.

Sounds from your checklist you might be better in a village or Tavi itself, but if you wanted to be in the countryside a few miles south, we've stayed here a couple of times, though admittedly not for nearly ten years.

Tavistock itself doesn’t sound like a bad bet for all those things! It has some lovely history, close to nice spots to explore Dartmoor from, and walking places like Burrator Reservoir. Good food to be found too!

Also, depending how much time is needed at Tavi for the dog training, if you don't mind being the other side of Dartmoor and commuting, you could see if there is space at Dartington.org, amazing place.

The only thing I would add is that being as it s Devon a nice place 15 miles away could take 15 mins to drive or could take 45 min to drive.

Market town. Not much goes on in the villages around for 10 miles around. Few bits in yelverton but not much.

Bring your waterproofs…

Rent a caravan or cottage  in Harford Bridge, they have a dog walking field opposite and paths to walk your dog over the fields.. Nice walk up the lane to Peter Tavy Inn for lunch or dinner or drive. Bus takes you into Tavistock or it's an easy flattish walk. The indoor market at Tavistock is OK. Lots of places to eat or drink.

Drive to Lydford Gorge - it's not a long walk down and up. Cotehele is a National Trust site 20 minutes away, an interesting place.

Castle Drogo is an interesting place too, built just before WW I on an epic scale and then massively too expensive to keep up so given to the nation. It's 45 minutes away. Plymouth is a similar time away, there's a good aquarium and a lighthouse that's interesting plus boat trips, restaurants etc.

For something different there's a fairground museum called Dingles about 30 minutes away. Tree Surfing near Gulwothy is also fun, if you're not up for rope work, the walk down to the Tamar there is nice.

Disclosure - my in-laws live in Tavistock so over the last 10 years with growing children I've been to most of the local attractions.

I live on the border of the Lake District, I don’t own any other type of clothing.

Hills aren’t as big, weather is pretty similar.
