My better half has always wanted to go to Iceland so I am trying to plan a holiday there for next year, any advice or experiences would be appreciated.

We went this year and hiked the laugavegur trail.
Flew with Wow air which are budget but ok. Hotels are expensive so we camped at the site next to the hostel which was clean and close to Reykjavik. Bus services are good as are coaches for excursions.
Flybus to and for the airport is perfect - they are outside the terminal after every flight. Worth booking in advance to get a place. They do a ticket that drops you at the blue lagoon which is on the way to/from Reykjavik. Blue Lagoon is well worth a visit and rounded off our week nicely.
Don't worry about booking excursions in advance, they're no cheaper and are a doodle to book through one of the operators in Reykjavik when you get there. Plenty to do and see if you're a fan of nature! Most amazing scenery ever!

Mountain Taxi. 4x4 with huge tyres. Takes you right up into the mountain where you can't walk without snow shoes.

We went for a long weekend earlier this year, got cheap hotel and hired a car in advance (can't remember hotel details or where we booked, I'll liase with my travel secretary 🙂 ) - did continental divide at Thingvellir, the blue lagoon, the waterfall at Selfoss (I think) and the Strokkur geysers, which were all fantastic. Had a quick poke around Reykjavik - didn't think much of it but I think that was down to us, with a bit of research I reckon there was more there for us. I remember the hotel as being not too far from Hveragerði, where they had an earthquake centre, and that was fairly cool - the simulator scared the pants off of me, and there are glass panels in the floor of the shopping centre it sits in that show you the actual fissure the earthuake created underneath.

Really liked Iceland and would love to go back in the future. Not a cheap place to eat or drink out in (but you knew that anyway), but beautiful in a rugged, "this landscape really doesn't give a f*** about you" kind of way. Every Icelandic person we spoke to was very helpful and spoke better English than we done. 🙂

Oh - and you can't take your hire car into the interior.
