Before we start the trawl through air BnB etc, anyone got any recommendations for a villa/apartment or similar they've stayed in?
Requirements are :
School summer holiday
Not too long a flight (so Europe basically)
Car rental with not too bad a drive from airport
Own space, couple of bedrooms
Pool
Can be in a town, in the sticks, on a mountain, on the beach, not necessarily good for any particular sport, but picturesque and chilled out would be nice!!

try looking at Vintage Villas. They are a relatively small (compared to air B&B) uk based agency that source villas in Europe. They pretty much all have pools, are in good locations. They chose the areas / regions they have villas in pretty well. we have stayed in thier places in Marjorca, Catalonia, Portugal, Galicia. pretty much all have been great. their website is good too to give an overview of the surrounding areas.
Alonia villa , Crete . Excellent villa near melidoni cave . 5 minutes walk to nearest village , very rural but definitely need a car as you’re a bit out the way . This place is by some margin the nicest I've ever used. The lounge is a little underwhelming, but in a week in summer I never sat in it. Watch the sun rise over the hills from the roof terrace. Geckos catching moths on the walls by night. Good pool. Sierra Nevada at your disposal.
We stayed here last summer, 8 properties but all very private, fantastic area with loads to do. Not sure about flights because we drive down
