So as my wife is doing Ironman Barcelona I get a £600 ish budget to spend on a holiday for me. I don’t have loads of riding mates to head off to the alps with, so I will probably go somewhere by myself.

Not too fussy on time of year or location, but will ideally be an “extra long weekend” 4-5 days.

What the holiday actually is I’m not sure- MTB would be good- lots of pedalling would suit as I’m doing mayhem solo in 2019 (and Mrs isn’t that into it), I love the idea of xc skiing if that’s doable solo for a long weekend somewhere, or road riding somewhere quiet/warm if I could tag onto a group?

Basically what would STW do with a few days to go away on an active holiday?

I would go to Ainsa.
Or go camping and blow the budget on c&h.ftw.

Go to Belgium, camp or rent a cottage and ride the Ardennes.

Kryton, tell me more. I'm looking to extend a family bouldering holiday to Fontainebelau at Easter with a weeks biking with the kid. Belgium would be an really easy add on. Is there good biking there?

OP. Apologies if I'm teaching granny to suck eggs, but solo XC skiing sounds a bit dangerous to me from an avalanche perspective. Who's gonna find you. Who's gonna dig you out.

I'd thoroughly recommend Finale for biking, as long as it's not summer.

Or go bouldering in bleau… something different....

Garda could chew that budget real fast. Southern Spain near the Sierra Nevada. Or Portugal. What time of year?

Spring would suit me best, but if I had to I could go in June/July.

Xc skiing I was thinking marked trails valley bottom type stuff, bit ski touring (although I wood love to progress to that in future- I’m still a beginner on the flats and with the mountaincraft, although I can ski downhill no problem.

Nice idea to ride in Northern Europe, any short mtb stage races around worth looking at?

Plenty of organised trips / holidays that would be with groups, often ability based.

For XC skiing you could always fly LGW to Bergan or Stavanger, (booked in advance approx. 60 quid) and then get the ski buss to Røldal or Sirdal. Røldal is more snow secure but either should be fine up until Easter. There is the Sirdal ski marathon every year but I'd need to check dates. Downsides are expensive booze and accommodation but if you search on Finn.no for hytte (cabin) and Røldal you can stay at some of the shared cabins for reasonable (by Norwegian standards!) costs. If you want more details I'd be able to forward on specific links etc.

I would go wandering around Scotland. Nice long gravel tour is easily possible in that time. wild camping and using the estate roads.
