You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Off to Dubrovnik in a couple of weeks. Advice on the internet suggests it would be a good idea to take Stirling and change at a bank/exchange when there, but that's from a couple of years ago.
Is this still a sensible idea, or old news now? Saves a lot of messing about sorting out before hand and then the possibility of having to change back on return.
I used a credit card and took a small amount of ready to go cash. then buy sweeties on the way home to get rid. same as every country. including my own.
I asked the same thing a week or so ago. Someone said to do the same as you normally would.
We went last year. Just got cash here and took it with us. Paid for sone stuff on the credit card too. It's bloody expensive mind. We did a day trip to Mostar which was just amazing. If you get the chance it's well worth it. Very poignant to see.
Thanks all,
dalesjoe, if you happen to return here, what's exensive? Using the card in Croatia or Croatia in general?
Croatia in general
I suspect he means this, it's similar to the UK really, not a total rip off but also not cheap.
It is however a really lovely place to visit.
Previously I've just ordered Kuna here and taken it over, I'm not sure where the people on here go on holiday but they often seem worried about carrying large sums of cash abroad - perhaps it's just the areas they go to 😉
Croatia is reasonable price-wise, partly because its not in the Euro, and partly because its full of deal-hunting Germans.
Dalesjoe, did you do Mostar by train?
It is one of the places I really want to go to, then on to Sarajevo, that is meant to be a great place to visit.
In answer to original post though, I only took a little bit of cash changed up here, then just used card when out there.
Haven't been for 3 years, so possibly a bit out of date, but certainly back then it was very cheap indeed. We took a fairly small amount with us in a mixture of euros and kuna, then topped up with kuna from an ATM when we were there.
We found that we often got a better deal when paying in euro than we did in kuna...
fantastic country - enjoy it!

We did that in reverse (kinda); Zagreb to Sarajevo by train, few days there (amazing and horrible and amazing), then train to Mostar (loved it), then we were going to get the train again to Dubrovnik but ended up getting lift with a couple we met in the little guesthouse we were staying in.
We actually went the whole way to Zagreb by train; Eurostar to Paris, TGV to Munich, night in Munich, then train all the way through Germany, Austria, Slovenia, it was beautiful.

I lived there in 2004 and the Kuna had moved from being fixed against the dollar to being fixed against the Euro. Not sure whether this is still the case, but worth checking.
That aside, away from the more touristy coastal spots it's an utterly gorgeous country.
We did a day trip from Dubrovnik to Mostar by coach. It was a full day and stopped off at a couple of places en route. One place was in Bosnia, can't be 100% of its name.... Pocitelj I think. A lovely place to stop, lots of mosques but a bit like something from the hobbit! We booked through one of the tour companies next to the main tourist info centre in Dubrovnik. Had plenty of time in Mostar too. Make sure you have some of the Bosnian food in one of the little cafes on the cobbled streets. Very cheap & simply stunning! It's probably one of the most moving places I've been to. Without doubt the highlight of my trip to Dubrovnik, just puts things into perspective if that makes sense?
As for costs in Dubrovnik it's more that it's about uk prices with some things being a bit more eg beer, wine, coffee. It's a bit of a sore point with the locals as they joke the last flight from dubrovnik to split each day is a money flight taking all the tourists cash up to split! My point is its a lot more expensive compared to prices in the rest of Croatia. I guess that's to be expected given its reputation with tourists etc.
One final thing...try and get out on the Kayaks...We did a trip out of dubrovnik at sunset. Great view of the old town from sea!
take Stirling
I think you will find this has been tried in the past.
Freeeeeeeeeedom!
😉
In fact I've just google imaged it...Pocitelj was the place. Looks even better than I remember! So if you do do the day trip get the one that stops there on the way! Certainly beats a service station!
Thanks for the additional tips people. Evening sea kayaks, sounds right up my street.
Last few years found Croatia quite cheap on holiday. Certainly compared to crossing the border into Slovenia and Euroland.

Yeap, you pay to be in Dubrovnik old town. It's a place to see and be seen, so wear you best togs. 😉
