Feeling sorry for myself and nothing better to do...
Booked to come Lanzarote to stay with a friend for 6 days. The plan was an unofficial roadie training camp.
Arrive at Luton airport car park and try to jump the first bus to the terminal, get refused as it's full(ish) and I have a bike bag.
Then realised I'd left phone in the car so a lucky escape...
Getto the terminal weigh the bike bag and head for oversize and there's a massive queue, nothing moving and loads of golfers and cyclists.
Eventually it gets sorted and it's a direct to the gate situation by now.
Normally I'd say that's about as bad as it would get right?
Arrive in Lanzarote to no bike! Luckily I had the foresight to put a GPS tag in the bag so I know it was next to the plane during boarding.
Contact easy jet and they apologize and say they will get it to me asap. (In fact they called me just as I was filling in the lost baggage claim)
Quickest way to get it hear turns out to be via Amsterdam (!) So off it goes and then doesn't get loaded on to either of the 2 or 3 direct flights and I lose another day
Next stop Barcelona, and it finally turns up in Lanza at 3pm on day 3.
All well and good you might say, if it wasn't for the fact I wake up that morning feeling like death warmed up!
I did manage a short ride that evening but it wiped me out.
So here I am sat in a beach side apartment feeling like crap and unable to ride, just counting the days until I can come home...
Woe is me, I know!!!
In my defence I have been looking forward to this for a while and wanted it to kick start a return to fitness and form that's been overtaken by lethargy and non stop eating recently
TLDR, see the first paragraph!!
This won't help but it might make you feel better.
I've just got home from a weeks snowboarding, sort of, I actually slipped on some decking on the way to drop the lad at ski school, destroyed a bin with my ribs and spent the rest of the week getting fat. And now I'm home I can't ride my bike...
yeah humble brag a go go
Alcohol can fix this.
It sucks when you've been looking forward to something and it doesn't work. This time last year we went to Calpe for a training camp. Rode for 3 days in the pissing rain and full winter kit. To make matters worse it was sunny in the UK. Forecast so bad we moved to an earlier flight, came home Thu and rode at home Fri, sat, sun.
The trip before was cancelled due to COVID. The year before that we were in Majorca and they shut the mountain roads due to snow.
We didn't organise a training camp this year 🤔
The other thing I forgot....
The taxi dropped me at the wrong address so I had a 35 minute walk to the right place!
The only moment I was glad I didn't have my bike bag with me!!
That Calpe trip sounds like the very reason I wouldn't normally bother!!
Lanzarote/ They dropped my bike from the plane's hold onto the tarmac- thankfully I'd packed it well, the bus driver tried to rip us off so after a long row I rode to the apartment, the apartment was shaby and dusty with a glacial dirty swimming pool, food was so-so, the wind was gale force, the dust got eveywhere.
When the plane landed back home they put the bike on a conveyor, the van started first time, the bed was comfortable and the food great, the trails slightly humid but no risk of being blown over or eyes full of dust.
Holidays are to make you realise just how fantastic home is.
