Can anyone recommend something basic that doesn't cost the world? Just sold a frame, so I thought I might treat Mrs Monkey to a week in a cottage instead of the planned camping trip... Near something nice eg. Beacons, Gower or something would be good!

None specifically - but used Under the Thatch website recently which was quite good.

<edit> also they allow pets which is good - we stayed here http://www.underthethatch.co.uk/tysinc

I meant sheddy. I think sheeddy is even less of a real word. Thanks for the offer though

I've found Dalton's Holidays website good for cheap cottages, chalets, static caravans etc. Also you could see if http://www.holidayhomegower.co.uk/ have availability. It's only a bungalow on a normal street but literally at the end of the street you are on the Gower coast path or down the steps to Castellamare in Mumbles.

What about Pembrokeshire? Lovely area with fab beaches, great walking and nice places to eat. Have stayed at both of these in St Davids, both really nice.

This ones backs onto the Cathedral... you can sit up on the old city wall watching the sunset with a glass of wine!

This one's a bit smaller and not quite as nice outlook, but central location, really well equipped and cosy:

If you're looking at the Gower, I've not stayed at either of these but have walked past both and can say that you'd be hard-pressed to beat them for location:
