so family of 4, 17 year so likes to run on and off road and bike road and or gravel and i'm the same. Mrs and Daughter enjoy some biking and time spent lounging at a lake or pool. Been to Annecy a few times and enjoyed that a lot and it works well for everyone, but was there last summer so looking for somewhere different and quite like the idea of the Bavarian alps. So looking for recomendations of campsites or general areas to go to, if not there also open to other suggestions.

many thanks

Can't really help with the Bavarian Alps, interested in any recommendations too.

We're off to Grubhof Camping, near Lofer in Austria, for the first time. Campsite looks great, plenty to do locally. 25 min from Leogang bike trails and 45 min from Salzburg for some site seeing.

We were in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberstdorf over the summer (admittedly walking and exploring) and there were lots of mountain bikers there.

Both were superb places and we had a ball.

We stayed at the Mount10 hostel in G-P, no self catering there though. Mountain huts around Oberstdorf when we were that side. I will say that most bikes we saw were e-bikes, possibly due to the steepness of the mountains.

Neither are that far from Munich airport on the autobahns and it really is beautiful and worth checking out.

@Hoff

Cracking location that campsite, I ride past it often on the other side of the river. If you have kids, take some inflatables.

We’re about 20 minutes away around the corner in Maria Alm all summer.

Evening. Been going to Bavaria over the last 20 odd years, plenty to do and very outdoor friendly!

Obersdorf , Sonthofen are great and plenty to go at. Easy marked cycle tracks and running / hiking trails. Cable cars for getting up high and following the routes for walks or to mountain huts.

I normally go to Garmisch though, we did this Sept with our 9-month old. Plenty of walking with the baby carrier. We stayed in a village in Grainau, just about 5km out of Garmisch. Plenty to do in the area, easy travel from Munich ( we flew and hired a car, 90 minute drive ). You can get the train easy enough from Munich airport and once you’re in Garmisch it’s all easy to get about. Plenty of restaurants , supermarkets etc.

Theres a campsite south of Garmisch towards Grainau on the main road ( think it’s called camping Zugspitze ). Aldi across the road, right on the river, easy to get about. Stayed on the campsite in the past, showers, all decent facilities.

lovely place - enjoy.

We've stayed on that site in Grainau - it's very good but book ahead as it's often very busy. Nice restaurant across the road.

Fab gravel bike route up the river valley to Plansee (Tour um Daniel)

There are also great mixed road gravel routes over near Scharnitz. A long day out from Grainau but worth it. The route via EhrwaldAlm is lovely.

The chocolate shop in old Partenkirchen is worth a visit.

If you've got experience the Alpspitze via ferrata is fab

One thing to remember if you stay locally for 3+ days is that you get a local travel card each (paid for by the tourist tax) so you get free bus transport and local trains too.

Although G-P area is fab there are plenty of great places to stay in the Bavarian Alps. We've been many times. The whole place is great for gravel bikes. One thing to remember is that most holiday towns are near the border so popping in and out of Austria is something that you do lots of the time. Don't discount Austrian towns in your search.

As mentioned, Oberstdorf is great for walking and road biking.

Mittenwald is great too and although closer to G-P it has a completely different feel to it. I would not recommend the Isarhorn campsite though. It used to be great and is now very poor.

Schliersee and Spitzingsee area is really pretty. Lots of walks and lakes to swim in. Bavaria is famous for the many lakes where local go swimming in the summer. Chiemsee is a huge lake with lots of facilities and big hills very close by. We stayed near Marquartstein recently and was surprised how nice it is. It's another great area for gravel bikes.

There's so many options it's hard to narrow down.

Thanks @colp that's good to hear. Will be taking paddle boards and kayak.

Any recommendations on stopping on the way down? Will be driving from Dunkirk and currently thinking about Luxembourg for a night or two.

@Hoff - we stayed here in Sept to break up the drive back to the tunnel. Nice area with plenty to see and do.
