Like this:

We had an extension built about 4 years ago*. This section of floor is in a knock-through between the existing house and new extension.

The hole appears to be where the cavity would have been in the original house wall. I think when the builders laid the slab for the extension they probably slopped a bit of cement into the cavity, but clearly not enough!

How best to deal with this?

Whack hard flooring over it and forget about it?

Chisel out the concrete and fill the hole afresh?

The hole is quite small, but deep, at least 400mm. I can waggle the pry bar in the picture to the left and right and feel a void to both sides.

WWSTWD**?

* And ran out of money and then had a baby in the meantime so please don't judge all the unfinishedness too harshly...

** Obvious answer is to call the builders of the extension, but based on prior experience it'll get sorted a lot quicker if I do it myself if it's simple enough, even at my glacial DIY pace.

Is the rest of the cement fairy solid? Tap it with a hammer and you will soon tell if it sounds hollow or not. If hollow sounding, smash it out and renew making sure there’s a bit of dpm in the bottom. If solid, fill hole and crack on.

Ramen noodles?

Filling it seems like the the best option...

Two votes for "fill it in", sounds like we may have a winner!

I got one suggestion on Insta to fix it with a doormat, which is also worth considering.

In re DPM, would you fill to the same level as the rest of the DPM in the slab, then extra bit of DPM in my hole, then fill level? Or stick DPM right at the bottom of my hole and fill from there?

Fill to the same level as dpm in the slab, dpm it, then fill in the rest. You then have a continuous dpm rather than a dpm with a big vertical gap between layers.

May take a while to dry out/cure at 400mm. Although I expect it won't be exposed to heavy weight so should be fine.
