So, how much credence should I give this:

Bearing in mind the links all go where you'd expect them to go to, except the online bank one, which take you to some spurious web site in the Nederlands...

In my experience HMRC pay you first and tell you about it later so if you were genuinely due a rebate it'd already be in the bank.

Had a number of rebates over the last few years and they always sent a letter in the post.

£632! You couldn't even buy a bike for that. Tell 'em to stick it.

Other than confirmation of a tax return I've never had an email from hmrc. They send letters

I did put a 😉 on the end, but it didn't show up, so I know it's bogus. The thing I can't quite understand is why the Internet bank link just takes you to this dead end site: http://www.annpettersson.nl/webblocks/ckeditor/plugins/editingblock/refundant/refundportal.htm
What's the point?
And yes, I know there's 46 emails in my inbox, when I updated to iOS 7, for some reason btinternet sent me a load of emails going back to 2011, and I'm taking my time going back through several hundred and deleting them. 😕
Bloody Yahoo mail. 😡
