Singletrackworld is the most useful forum on the internet, so I thought there might be someone here who can help.

I got a letter today from HMRC saying that now my 21-22 self assessment return is now more than 3 months late, I'm being fined by the day.

Only I've already completed it - it says so in my online account.

So I called to sort it out, only to find out the helpline is now closed until 4th September.

What's the best way to sort this?

Appeal it with the information you have https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/business-account/help/self-assessment/payment-and-penalties

They then have to assess in 15 days with contact details.

Does it show as submitted? You can complete it without submitting. If it shows as submitted then it does sound like a cock up at their end and you should be ok

Just done that now - thanks for your reply. Fingers crossed they sort it quickly and don't tell me it's my fault and keep adding the daily fines!

I panicked that I might not have submitted it then, but have the email confirmation. Thanks @nickjb

Thanks for reminder, I usually call them to confirm they 've got mine.

I had exactly this a few years ago.
They (after a protracted phone call and me being firm that the issue was at thier end not mine) cancelled the fine.

It's mad isn't it? Can you imagine any private sector company having its helpline down from (I believe) June until September? The issues I'm having with self assessment are bad, but the nightmare I'm having with child tax services is even worse.

Being a grown up is rubbish!

Stick to your guns. My son got a late filing penalty a few years ago for a 'company' he set up, but wasn't trading, and forgot to do ca return. Roll on a year or two and he wound it up. The 'charges' were refunded as it clearly hadn't traded in that time.

Their phoneline is down until September but they are responding via their online chat.

https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/self-assessment

click on ‘Ask HMRC online’ it’s a computer response initially but if you ask a couple of times to speak to an agent they should put you through. May take a couple of tries (recommend doing it early in the morning) but they should be able to cancel things immediately and you can also save the chat in case of future issues which you can’t do on the phone

That's what I did thecadian.

I don't imagine everyone is waiting for an update, but the answer is that I'm fine. It's standard policy to scare people like this:

"That's okay- you do not need to worry as we send standard letter to our customer that was not issue a tax return notice at start of the year- we have your tax return for 21/22 on time and no charges"

Anybody else have no tax due end of July this year even though I've not over paid or not earnt enough? It's saying I owe loads more than normal per half year but it's all due end of January next year? Normally there are two payments roughly equal.

The thing that is particularly ironic, is they are quick to penalise and fine, yet if they owe you money they will take as long as they like.  Repaying some stamp duty owed took over a year for the cheque to arrive.  meanwhile i was getting demands to pay tax owed....
