hopefully some one will be able to shed some light on this!

The SO has received a pile of letters from HMRC, covering 3 of the last 4 tax years, she is meant to be on PAYE, each letter has various tax calculations, then a refund or a request for payment. The one asking for payment says it must be been made by January 2019, letter dated June 2019.

Anyone any ideas why HMRC would send out forms like this?

She is writing to them asking WTF, but be nice to know if this was normal practice.

If she's on PAYE have there been errors with her tax code or have her employer made errors with deductions? Maybe before picking up the phone to the HMRC check with the accounts dept at work and see the material HMRC have sent makes sense to them and ask if they've over or under payed.

You can setup an online login to view your tax record (massive pain, needs government gateway ID and there are some dodgy clone sites so care needed).
Once in you can view tax record and get an up to date tax code to get over/under payments resolved through PAYE.

I am just doing my tax return today so am thinking about tax stuff. So in pops an hmrc email looking very authentic I have to admit.

Total scam but a well timed one, I nearly fell for it.

I would call them to confirm the letters are genuine.

I've had shit loads of problems over the last few years with HMRC, they really do get it masively wrong sometimes even for paye. Mine mainly stems from receiving a yearly bonus but I've had similar calculations sent out recently saying I owe money, it's usually down to any BIK. I've ended up giving our company accountant full access to my HMRC details and she can now deal with them directly.
They are very good at answering the phone these days so longs as you don't ring at lunch time, and the people you speak to are usually pretty switched on and helpful. I'd just give them a call.

As I’ve had to point out out to a surprising amount of otherwise intelligent and knowledgeable people just because you are PAYE it does not mean that you will necessarily have paid the correct amount of tax. Not only that but the responsibility lies with the individual, not the employer.

Give them a call, the folk I’ve dealt with have always been surprisingly helpful at helping to sort stuff out.

needs government gateway ID

Not any more, they have now thankfully federated with other identity providers like the Post Office and banks.

Yep, generally very helpful. My wife had back dated tax penalties which were impossible to pay on time without a time machine, but she filled in the form explaining this and they just dropped them all.

OP just noticed you said you're wife was writing to them, wouldn't mess about with that personally. As I say just call them, they will sort any errors out there and then and do a quick calc to add in any underpaid tax in to the remaining years tax code. Depending on how much she owes or is owed when all totalled you will see a change in take home pay. It really is easy and the beat way to sort.

So everyone is now expected to have full accountancy credentials? How would I be expected to know what my employer should be taking each month? That’s way above my pay grade!

They are astonishingly shit at times. Four years in a row they’ve sent me a tax credits renewal form when I’ve never claimed. Four years in a row of calling and being on hold for ages. Then get told it’s an error and the claim is closed. I’ve never even tried to claim so no idea where the hell the first renewal even came from.

A detailed calculation is not what I meant but it is incumbent on the individual to make sure that your employer is applying the correct tax code and yes to make sure that code is correct in the first place. It will also always fall to the individual to make up and shortfall should there be a mistake.

Your employer only knows how much the are paying you they don't know any other details of additional income that may be taxable and that is why it is to the individual to make sure that their tax is correct.

HMRC, the organisation that threatened to take me to court for a VAT bill of 0......(we'd bought new equiptment for our shop) having just been sent a £200 vat refund......phoned to explain their error......which they agreed, so asked if this was the end of it......no we would need to write to them or they would still take us to court.......my respose......see you there, looking forward to it!!
