I've done file recovery before using [url= http://www.inside-security.de/insert_en.html ]free[/url] linux distros.
Basic script is download the OS, burn to a CD, reboot from CD instead of hard drive, type appropriate commands, rebuild table.
Sorry can't be more helpful - but can be done with perseverance.

The free version will report what it can find (IIRC, it will get back files up to a certain size)
