As we're heading towards christmas, relatives are asking what I would like. I'm a big fan of useful presents and a compressor fits the 'useful' tag. Has anyone got one and would recommend it or not? What's a good feature to look for? What works or does not?

Usage: odd car tyre top up. Tubeless problem solving.

Price: <£100

Cheers

all the sub-£100 ones are bloody loud (around the 96 dB mark). I had one and got shot of it as it was just too unpleasant to be anywhere near when it fired up! YMMV. I have a quiet compressor now which is loads better although it's actually not something I use all that often.

TBH for less money than that I got a Makita 18v inflator which is better for car tyres (plus it's portable) and an Airshot which is better for tubeless!

I have a SGS compressor which is fine, and I've fitted a trackpump dual hose/end so fitting it to presta valves and shraeder valves is fine. It's loud though, as zilog says.

The Makita 18V would be better for car tyres though.

Screwfix has the 18v Makita unit on offer at £40 (bare).

I got a Stanley 24ltr job from screw fix last year. Yes, it's loud, but it fills pretty fast and once there is of course silent. Can't really justify spending more for something infrequently used.

found it incredibly useful, not just for tires n' that, but also cleaning/drying stuff. very effective. e.g. removing old grease from bearings. (though wear eye protection and keep your eyes closed, I have since learned...)
