Two questions;

1) Do they work?

2) Should I worry about letting whoever also gets told (British Gas?) when my doors are used or movement is detected have information about when my doors are used or movements are being made?

Quite fancy getting a couple for the garage doors as a start point - it's in wi-fi range of the hub.

Less certain about the movement ones as they can track you round the house.

Well it's not a bad idea but I'd never use BG for stuff like this - they're wildly expensive.
For example, they want £39 for a wireless socket adapter when I can get 4 energenie ones for £24 (recently picked up 4 on ebay for £9).
If you want to do stuff like this, and you don't mind a bit of learning, you could do it all (plus a lot more) with a RaspberryPi for much much less money.

Less certain about the movement ones as they can track you round the house.

Not quite sure what you're worried about here?

We've already got the Hive heating so it's just adding a couple of sensors.

The Plug and Play and 'already has an app' is what attracted me, tbh, I don't have the time to fart about getting it all set up.

I'm not entirely clear how much data get's sent back up the line to BG/Hive - I'm relatively comfortable about them knowing when the garage gets used but identifying which rooms are occupied and when seems a bit creepy. Maybe that doesn't happen though?

Without getting all JHJ....

The creation of data about when you are/are not in the house and what you do/don't do in your house and then choosing to share that with a business via the public internet.

IOT is great in theory, but it's not a closed system and it isn't controlled by the end user.

But then that's true of the internet age: en masse people are prepared to give up fundamental privacy in facvour of "cool" and "free" stuff. It's quite fascinating.

I have a Nest thermostat.

I agree, so rather than call the sensors living room, bedroom, etc you could just use 1,2,3. Fairly anonymous.

IOT is great in theory, but it's not a closed system and it isn't controlled by the end user.

Only really true if you give your data to a company such as BG and it isn't anonymous. I send plenty of data* to Initial State and it's useless to them, but not if you then associate that data with an absolution location.
There is no way would I send data to that could be associated with me/a property.

i was in the same boat, we have the hive heating controller and these looked simple to integrate & install ...... they were.

Ordered on Tue turned up Wed, installed 3 last night in as many mins.

Only issue is it sends a text and email, need to work out how to stop the emails.

Regarding BigBrother tracking my movements .... does't really bother me.

Will give them a go in the garage and think about the other stuff.

Do they charge you for the texts?
