Apparently, according to the email, he's been genetically engineered to be faster, stronger and smarter than some other agents. And a major corporation has built an army of clones to destroy him. I think it might have been a computer game.

Nope, I don't get it either - the first film was okay-ish, but it waded into battle with a decent lead actor who was at a peak of his career and it was a well liked game series so came with ready made audience.
But this one has a lessor known star, has be redone so 'agent 47' seems to be the baddie in this one and the last game of the series came out in 2009 and was not well liked.
The back-story isn't especially unique or special, I don't understand the point of the tie-in.
I liked the first one for a turn brain off and enjoy movie plus it had Olga Kurylenko in it. Be interested to see the new one but I can wait till its on dvd.
