I was hit from behind a few days ago by a united utilities van.

I noticed the tyres all looks (almost) bald.

think my cars wrote off.

lucky my daughter and I are ok (walloped my head, and neck sore)

but pissed that this is a fleet vehicle and obviously not looked after

Got pictures?

If he hit you from behind, normally you'd expect that to go in your favour, bald tyres or not.

Well tell somebody!!

At the very least the company if not the police, did anybody attend?

nobody knows about the tyres

Including you. All you know is that they "looked almost bald". Unless you took photos or measurements of tread depth depth at the time it's probably too late to prove anything either way.

What is it you're hoping to achieve at this point?

Tell your insurance company what you suspect and let them deal with it.

You could get in touch with their transport manager/operations manager and relay your concerns and any pictures that you may have, or report to police if you've actually got some evidence.

I don't think it would have prevented the accident. but at the same time it would have lessened the impact.

just took photos, but your right...without a ruler its hard to gauge the exact tread depth (legally).

no it was dry.

it happened on Thursday on the way to a weekend away (only just got back)

what am I trying to achieve...er, not 100% sure at this point. but I know it doesn't feel right to have one of what might be a lot of fleet vehicles on the roads with bald tyres.

I guess if the accident would have been side on or a little different and my daughter or I were badly injured I'd be looking to achieve as much as I could in terms of highlighting the issue.

Am I to let it go because we where lucky and unhurt?

(just heard the car is a write off)

but I know it doesn’t feel right to have one of what might be a lot of fleet vehicles on the roads with bald tyres.

Most fleet vehicles rely on the driver to check the level of tread on the tyres. I've had lots of different fleet vehicles over the years and never once has a fleet manager refused to buy new tyres if i've asked. Usually they ask you to go their supplier who'll check the tread and, having a vested interest in selling tyres, recommend that they be replaced.

It's not the fleet at fault here, it's the driver

And it's a fine + 3 points per tyre so if all 4 then it would be very costly for the driver not to say very dangerous.

in dry conditions (ignoring loose surfaces) a bald tyre has (marginally) more grip than one with a tread pattern, so I doubt the condition had any bearing on the accident at all..

That was why I asked if it was wet. While not great having a van in that condition, he was effectively using racing slicks.
