On my "bucket list" is driving a convertible. I never have. However the only ones I can find for hire are super expensive mercs and the like for hundreds of pounds a day

Anyone any clues where I could get one cheaper? I'd be quite happy with a little car - I don't need 5l of V8. anywhere in central Scotland will do

ta

I'm sure there is a Caterham hire firm that operates around the Cairngorms. Can't remember their name, and it's not central Scotland, but I've always fancied it!

Filter by model - convertible and a few locations in Glasgow and Edinburgh. BMW 2 series from £57 a day.

Edit: I've put a few different dates in to try, can't get anywhere near the quoted 'from' price. Sorry.

sixt seem good value from the headlines but when you actually try to book I found that the low price is for one tuesday in November!

£172 a day is just about feasible I guess. I am just used to hiring for £25 a day

Ta chaps - I was sort of hoping more for a peugeot or something much cheaper

Said no one. EVER!

😉

Seriously, however, do you know anyone who owns one, or who knows someone who does? Might work out better to borrow rather than hire.

I have a friend with a garage full of niceness, but he's over towards Ben Lomond. Annoyingly protective, as well! Hands off most of it, but he did let me have a go in his mental works (ish) Volvo Amazon so he's not all bad.

I've no experience using them but have you looked at sites where ordinary people rent out their own cars.

For example https://carclub.easycar.com/ there are a couple convertibles around Edinburgh available depending on dates.

Why not just wander into a showroom and ask for a test drive 🙂

I know a guy (who was actually pretty much off his rocker) who used the plethora of car dealerships on the Longman in Inverness as a sort of lending library whenever he need a car

Could you buy a used mx5 mk1 or mk2 and sell it when finished? Probably under £1k to buy.

Buying used would cost me a lot I guess - no no claims for the insurance never having owned a car.

Is that an offer?

Obviously would need all legalities sorted but it would be great.

I was going to suggest buying an MX5 now, and then selling early August, you wouldn't loose money

No worries. I'll be pretty busy til then (In France just now and have to sort out y band and all the catering when I get back)
Have a look at Day Insurance policies, think they are about £30-ish, then wait for a nice sunny day

I didn't have a no-claims discount when I insured my MX5 because NCDs can't be shared. It still wasn't especially expensive (about GBP400, IIRC).

If you're under 25 it's a different story of course.

I have a 2CV you could borrow, it's little and doesn't a V8 🙂

The test drive option is a good call though. When I bought a new Honda Accord tourer in 2005 I said to the dealer that ideally I'd like to try it for a weekend to see if it served its purpose. No problem at all, picked the demo car up Friday, dropped it off Monday.
