Any ideas on good hillwalking country an hour's drive (or so) from Telford? Me and the missus can get away for a day later this week, but we need to deposit the bairns at Telford with the grandparents.
We live near the Peak so were looking for something in a different direction - never done any hiking in Wales or the SW. Would be looking for a relatively substantial walk - 6,7 hours, mountains a bonus but settle for anything hilly and remote-feeling.
I spend a lot of time walking in the Black Mountains and the Beacons, or around the Rhayder Lakes.
A loop taking in all of the Elan Valley lakes and a stretch of the monk's trod makes for a good epic.
Yellow markings on these are some of the walks Ive recorded in the Black Mountains.
A lop starting and finishing at Hay might suit you - gives you a choice of ridges in the black mountains to go for.
BTW - I wouldnt call any of the Black "Mountains" mountains, or the Beacons. Big hills really. Snowdonia is probably the closest thing to mountains in Wales IMO. But I dont like walking there much except maybe for Cadair.
Thanks Stoner, some good stuff to look at there.
Hay would be a great starting place but I think our timing is bad - will it not be over-run at the moment? We'll be looking to stay somewhere for the night after the day's walk.
I am sure Stoner has it covered but there is some fantastic countryside around Longtown.
Has the misses been up Lord Hereford's Knob?

Worcestershire, but the Malverns
Remote and mountains I would say the Berwyns, start from Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall, up Cadair Berwyn. But it might be very boggy given the weather we've had.
Similarly, there are some paths around Lake Vyrnwy and into the hills from there. The difficulty is finding a loop. You could take the Pererindod Merangell path towards Cwm Pennant and then loop back over?
