Story on news tonight, linked to this - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-25618915

Policeman saying that advising cyclists to wear helmets and high viz jackets was their advice when "engaging" cyclists at Junctions.

Nothing about advice to drivers, and what they might change or do better?

Well I think that's good advice an I do it anyway. It's the engaging that's odd. Do they engage anyone else to share advice?

Do they know what tyres are best for Cannock?

They could remind drivers that there is no duty on cyclists to wear either and they should be looking for cyclists even dressed in black.

Giving advice to drivers would be more appropriate sometimes.

From today's Ficticious Times

"Today, when you go out in your vehicle" spoke no policeman ever, "try really, really hard not to kill anyone"

to allow drivers to concentrate on driving instead of looking for cyclists ....

Trail rat - it's democracy in action. People don't want to be made to drive better, so any attempts to force them to result in lost votes.

Sounds like reasonable advice to me.

Maybe I'm trying hard enough to be militant ?

The brain-dead halfwit who drove into the back of a police car parked on the hard shoulder of the M4 yesterday being a case in point. The police car had pulled someone over for speeding, so was parked with the lights going, as always, which means he's visible around a mile away, shitforbrains promptly drives straight into the rear! Some of my family were stuck behind it for over an hour, although the accident had happened some time before, the roof and doors had been cut away to get one of the officers out; fortunately no-one was seriously injured.
How the frack could that happen! I guess someone texting or tweeting.

so we are merrily going to ignore that approx 1500 cyclists were ticketed for RLJ, and 2500 motorists ticketed for driving while using a mobile?

approx 4000 cyclists ticketed
approx 10000 motorists

maybe someone can tell me if those figures are broadly in line with current user stats. I would expect a bias towards cyclists as it was the unfortunate death of a handful of cyclists in a couple of weeks that sparked this off.

.
The whole article / reporting is biased as is the approach by the police IMHO. Up to cyclists the make themselves visible to motorists, total tosh

It is just a complete red herring. So much more to making yourself visible than wearing a yellow jacket. If you're not where a driver is looking (and not what a driver is looking for) then doesn't matter what you're wearing. It's a shame people can't seem to move on from this.
