have a ps3, a nas with all my music on and an old hd ready tv (old style single hdmi input)

would like to play my music and add quality sound to tv with a view to upgrading one day to surround sound.

was thinking of adding an onkyo txnr414 networked av receiver (down to £190 at mo') and a set of kef iq10s. could then upgrade the tv to a 3d set in future and add 5:1 if required.

i assume i would plug the hd of the ps3 into the tv via an hdmi adaptor and the plug the onkyo into the ps3 via coax?

are there any problems that i'm going to land myself in with any of this lot?

Sounds OK to me, you just have to set the PS3 to Audio Multi-Output. You should be able to browse the HD for music too if you network the Onkyo and set up a media server on the PS3.

A receiver is a good idea, as you're 'future proofing' yourself - lots of inputs/outputs.

Although tbh I run my music through a separate HiFi and quality speakers (as I've one for years).

The ps3 also has a digital optical out, I've got mine connected to the tv via hdmi and then the surround sound via this, means I can listen to the music on the ps3 without having to use the telly. Not sure which is better sound quality out of this or the coax, to be honest. No doubt a STW hifi expert will be along shortly though!

will prob listen to the music direct from the onkyo as it will stream music direct from NAS without the ps3 or telly being on.

i think.

Can't you use the receiver for hdmi switching. I bought an Onkyo TXSR608 that takes HDMI from PS3, Sat box and PC. Also component from DVD and optical from the CD out. Has HDMI pass through so need not be on when watching on the TV.

it may not be an issue for you but as far as i know the onkyo dlna on the lower models only supports some audio formats and no video. i think you also navigate through the tv, whether you can turn tv off or not is unclear.

fwiw im looking for a sony av networked amp that does video as well at a reasonable budget

I've a TX-8050 and found playback from a NAS was possible but jerky. Until I got a router with a built in media server (readyshare). Works a treat now, with just a USB HDD plugged into the router. So seemed to need some hardware pushing it out rather than just something to pull. That's why I suggested the PS3 as a server. Playing from your phone works well too.
