My Cyrus 2 hums and is only producing audible volume with line level through the phono input 😮 (after a skoosh with contact cleaner in the volume put and selector switches).
Seems to be worth £80-100 as is...I'm ok with a soldering iron and multimeter... worth trying to fix?
Or...what decent compact amp to use in its place? A power amp only would do, it will be used with mobile DAC (yet to be purchased, recommendations welcome) and laptop/lossless files and Ruark Icons (which I designed 🙂).
Will Cyrus still do the upgrade at reduced cost thing?
I have a Cyrus system that has developed a 50hz hum. It has a separate pre and power amp which each have their own huge power supplies.
I assume its a capacitor breakdown problem, but havnt been inside to check.
Slight thread hijack, but will you post what you find out so i can decide how to resolve my hum?
Thanks
Ian
I'm it's from the 80s or 90s, I'll check their website.
Ian mine is integrated, it does sound like you know more than me!

We managed to source a Cyrus Two of this era and take advantage of the company’s ability to continue to service many of its earliest products. It's admirable that Cyrus can still support products that are into their third decade of life and bring them back to full working order. There aren’t many audio companies that can do the same.
Might be worth contacting Cyrus rather than DIY in the first instance, even if just to get an idea of what they might charge? That article is from Feb this year.

Ah, or maybe not!
A comparable amp would be £600+ if £300 was a warranted refurb I'd think about it 🤔
Look for North Hill Audio on Facebook, a lot of us on Retrobike have had repairs and mods done. Specialises a bit in older kit.
Wow £300! Im certainly not an elec engineer, but recently my lcd tv gave up. On opening it, there were 3 electrolytic capacitors that had badly swollen.
I read the rating of them, and ordered from ebay. They were about £3 inc post. It took a few moments to swap them over, and the tv was fixed.
When they fail, they go from a normal cylinder shape to bulging quite dramatically at the top and bottom. It was easy to identify and the results were great.
I appreciate that there are more components than capacitors in there, but at a certain age they are known to fail.

at a certain age they are known to fail.
At a certain vintage - late 90s and most of the 2000s - they're known to fail.
Try these guys. https://www.wilkinsons.tv/
Old school hifi repairers. Did my Cyrus 2 a few years back, cost about £100
You won't get anything close to Cyrus 2 quality for £100 new or second hand
Just about to recommend them.
Good people.
Just down the road too, which helps.
Thanks all. Il investigate a bit more about see if it's a DIY, which failing Wilkinson's.
I had no idea it was of such value.
So I've had a look and can't see anything wrong.
Local guy says new caps likely at £200 (he did one recently) plus whatever the faiult is, so easily up to Cyrus's £300 (which is what it'd be worth on eBay, fixed) but they look good and I will research testing them...it's worth £100 as-is I think
If it doesn't work out. I've just got myself a Rega Brio and it's a lovely bit of kit.
Should sound a lot better once sorted out. Us Naim owners get our kit serviced (10 yrs?) at this sort of cost.
