Had a inguinal hernia last year and in April got it fixed with a bi lateral hernia repair. Had 8 weeks off work after the op and all was good thereafter. A couple of weeks ago the pain I was having pre op returned, exactly the same place. I'm pretty sure the hernia is back as I can feel it. Been back to the doctors and he is sending me for a scan. Has anyone else suffered with inguinal hernias and had them reoccur after surgery? To say it is a kick in the teeth is an understatement and it would seem the only fix is more surgery. Is this likely to go on for ever more or will further surgery fix it long term? Are there any alternatives? Any positivity welcomed.

Trev.

I had a Sports Hernia / Gilmours Groin fixed in 2008. It's not quite the same as an Inguinal Hernia but very similar.
I too had several weeks off work and beyond that it took some time to heal.
I know you don't want to hear this, but yes, it still returns!
Though the surgery relieved me of all pain and discomfort which in was miraculous, I find now even seven years after surgery if I regularly cycle hard, then the pain returns. Several times I've considered returning to the consultant, but my GP recommends rest and after a month or so the pain goes away. I cycle hard again for a good few months and it returns.
Unfortunately I think this is my new life! I've come to accept it that I run and cycle for perhaps 4 or 5 months have a month off and then resume. It's sh*t but thats what I have to accept!

I had bi lateral inguinal three months ago, the surgeon who did it had a lot of experience and wasn't shy in telling me how good he was, i think it's a factor in failure rates.
I was told not to lift, but was back at work and in the gym after a week, just did stuff that didn't engage my core after two weeks i started doing light core exercises and anything that didn't give me pain. Three weeks in i did something that i was convinced had knackered it up, i was gutted, three weeks later i visited the consultant and he said everything was ok, relief 😀
I still have a fair amount of pain, especially in my right testicle, but i'm almost back up to full speed in the gym, i'm really giving my core special attention, plenty of hanging leg raises, wipers and dragon flags.
My surgeon said it could reoccur in the future if i lift very heavy stuff, so i'm keeping away from the pb deadlifts and squats.
Not sure this is any help to you, but all the best if you have to go through the surgery again.

Just over a year since my repair. Back to normal now but took a while. Surgeon said to me exercise from about two weeks, but build up. I was back at work in a week but sit at a desk, so not exactly much strain. Sick note was actually two weeks.
I can't remember exactly but I was pretty much back on full cardio exercise and some light/conditioning weights within 3/4 months. By six I was bouldering again and full on mountain biking. I've only recently stopped "feeling" it in some way or form, but did not have the pain or symptoms above at any point subsequent to surgery.

I had open surgery rather than keyhole, don't know if that makes any difference, but I was surprised by the length of the incision! Old school surgeon I think. I did a lot of reading when I got mine done, and it might be worth looking at some of the latest thinking on rest and exercise post surgery. I've no idea whether what I did was luck or judgement though to be honest.

I think reoccurrence is a real risk and I am paranoid about any pain in the groin area. On Friday night on old bikers night out we were comparing hernia stories and one of the other lads said that he'd had hto have one redone.

Not sure any of that helps. But good luck and hope it works out.
