My daughter decided to upgrade her MacBook after getting some money from work to help with WFH and was offered £250 trade in from Apple, so I said I'd giver her the money and I would use it. She shipped it to me via Hermes and it arrived this morning in its original box with you guessed it, the MacBook missing. She paid for insurance but just found a long list of exclusions which, you guessed right again excludes laptops.

The MacBook has been marked with smart water so is this worth reporting to the police? Any other advice? And finally, if you ship stuff of value make sure you have the insurance cover you need.

Yes report it to the police and kick up a fuss with my Hermes too, it may come to nothing but that's better then rolling over and taking it.
I use my Hermes for boring/cheap items, anything of value or sought after goes in plain packaging with royal mail special delivery. I know that's not much use to you now, sadly I've learned though experience though like your daughter 🙁

Yes, it has been stolen! Ring the Police!

Also get in touch with yours and her home insurance and see if they cover things in transit.

Hermes may be able to wriggle out of is due to their t&cs but theres a chance the small claims court might disagree if you pursue them.

Yes, serial number is on the back of the original box which arrived. Daughter’s birthday today so will pick this up tomorrow. Thanks for the advice and if I get any joy I’ll post up.

I don't see how laptops being excluded from insurance means they can just steal them and not compensate you.

Yeah, they can't really say "T&Cs let us steal your Mac". Get the cops involved and if that doesn't get them to pay up then small claims.

Maybe make a fuss with Hermes on their Twitter account - seems that you are quite likely to get a favourable outcome if you do that sort of thing these days... 🤷‍♂️

Things going missing in Hermes depots must be a cottage industry!
They've lost a pair of walking boots and a petrol lawn mower (insured) of mine.
Never ever send anything valuable via Hermes is my moto.

Was the package resealed? If so they can't claim it just fell out somewhere.

I had this a few years ago with another delivery company.
As the package had been resealed with tape, it was obviously theft and not just an 'accident'. This meant the police were willing/able to give me a crime number, and the company compensated me pretty sharpish.

After being asked to jump through many, many hoops by Hermes and mainly down to the tenacity of my daughter the good news is hermes have agreed an insurance claim refund of £250 plus the original shipping and insurance costs.
