One of my 21 year old daughters has just packed in uni after year two as she'd had a bad start there due to lockdowns that affected her mental health - I'm happy to support her choice as uni isn't for everyone.

Anyway, long story short, it turns out that she's been accepted by Emirates for cabin crew!

She's amazed as she never really thought about doing that and only applied as she was bored one night a couple of months ago and never really took it seriously!!

So she's off to Dubai in August for at least 6 months but more likely >12 months.

I pay for the whole family's mobile [sim only] contracts which are with Tesco Mobile but I don't really know what to do now - she will be flying all over the world after mid-November and I doubt her current contract is really going to work.

So what do people do when they travel/are away from the UK so much?

She needs a dual SIM phone. Get a UAE number on one of them - she can pick them up anywhere when she is there. Keep the UK number on the other.

Vodafone used to do a really good global roaming tariff, but they shuffled all the plans around.

That's what I was thinking.  Maybe one that does eSim?

Just had a look a Vodafone - no better than anyone else.  Apparently the public wifi is pretty epic n Dubai and when she's elsewhere there will be hotel wifi so maybe I'm overthinking it!  She probably needs a UAE contract though and may as well keep the UK one initially.

When we were there last summer you could pick up a free SIM in the airport that gave you some limited data for a few days, then you can just set up an account with it and buy more data/calls.

We just used free Wifi  when we were there back end of last year for 4 days.

We managed to get uber taxis etc whenever we needed them using free wifi. The only issue I did have was that I accidently switched my 4g whilst out on a run, and it was quite an expensive run!

No one walks anywhere in Dubai, and I assume she will be living out of a suitcase in a hotel? Also if she is working for Emirates as cabin crew, wont she be flying to other parts of the world, or have they said UK only?

She will probably want some form of VPN though as WhatsApp is blocked out there, not sure about other social media. We just used a VPN and whats app for calling.

No, Emirates supply accomodation free of charge so she will be based in that for about 12 months - other than when she is flying when she could be anywhere in the world staying in a 4 or 5 star hotel (FOC also!)

I think she needs a "local" SIM and then rely on public WiFi when in other countries.

Didnt know about WA in Dubai..... That's not good 😬

WhatsApp voice is blocked, not WhatsApp messaging (including voice notes) generally. The suggested local app is ... not recommended...
