There's almost nothing but bad news these days, so it's worth remembering all the nice little things that you can enjoy free...

so what's your nice thing?

Mine is walking the dog.

Regardless of how I feel the boundless joy of the dog as she gets off the lead is guaranteed to bring a smile.

Riding a bike with my ever improving son, it's a joy to watch and be part of, and his enthusiasm for it resulting in gathering 12 buddies for a two day 15 hour bike sesh last weekend at the local off piste jumps. 🤘

That moment between falling asleep and waking. It's like a semi conscious state of death where the realities of the world don't exist.

One thing I’m really looking forward to soon is that moment I’m suddenly aware Spring has arrived, it’s subtle but immediate, a realisation that’s it’s still light later than I would expect, there’s a hint of warmth in the air and a smell I can’t really describe.

Just about to say the same thing, horrible plant. Suppose it's the aussie revenge for the rabbits, sheep and camels.

Anyway, it's Friday. And that's a nice thing.

The bum wiggle my dog does when I get home and he's so happy to see me he can't contain himself. Seeing my wife napping on the couch on a Sunday afternoon.

Daffodil heads poking through the earth on a dreary day reminding me spring isn't too far away.

My crazy cocker spaniel, acting like I've been away for decades when I get up every morning.

Sunday papers on the sofa, beer in hand, smell of a roast wafting by.

Crumpets with loads of butter.

Luxuriating in a hot shower after a muddy winter ride.

Riding my motorbike on a warm, sunny day.
Followed by a cool, refreshing, frothy beverage when I return home.

Waking up on Monday before realising it's actually Saturday.

Being out in the hills, on foot or on wheels hearing curlews, skylarks, lapwings, buzzards, etc. Then drinking beer afterwards.

Creamy unsalted butter.

Cream.

Playing music.

Hearing for the first time a band, composer, type of music I'm not familiar with that really hits the spot.

Yesturday my 5 year old girl did her class assembly performance. In one part of the play the teacher asked each child "what makes you happy?". The usual 5 year old answers came back, "chocolate", "spiderman", birthday cake" etc. When the teacher got to my daughter her answer was "huggles with my Daddy"

Believe me, there is nothing in life nicer than the feeling i got when she said that infront of her whole school 🙂

Watching the sunset on a warm summer's evening
The smell of the first rain in a few days after it's been hot
the waft of wood smoke from a bonfire
When the trail just flows and it feels effortless
A snoring pup by your side
When my partner falls asleep on my lap
My dogs waggily bum out on a walk
Turning off the boat's engine, pulling in the mainsheet and the boat surging forward silently.

Life is awesome

Sitting doing nothing other than enjoying the warmth of the sun on your face.

Evening summer rides, when the countryside is yours alone and the light is fantastic.

When the teacher got to my daughter her answer was “huggles with my Daddy”

...... my glasses have suddenly gone blurry!

In a similar vein, hearing my eldest daughter sing 'Fields of Gold' and my youngest daughter handing me my first grandchild! ..... which then reminds me of being handed my eldest daughter by the Dr that ensured she breathed two minutes after her appearance (a very, very long two minutes!)

Good music. Taking the RC truck out . Walking the hills with the misses & little un. Finding new trails. Getting little un into school ( he's high functioning asd with chronic anxiety). THC vape juice ( it's a godsend to counter my BPD anxiety & depression).

job, career, family, ****ing big television, washing machines, cars, compact disc players, electrical tin openers, good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance, fixed-interest mortgage repayments. friends, leisure wear and matching luggage. A three piece suite on hire purchase in a range of ****ing fabrics. DIY and wondering who the **** you are on a Sunday morning. sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing ****ing junk food into your mouth. rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, ****ed-up brats you have spawned to replace yourselves.

Or obviously, failing that, heroin.

My missus ..she is just way too nice for a grumpy git like me ..but I count myself a very lucky man that she seems to like & love me ..
My Kids ..and especially the rare occasions when it's just me & them ..my daughter is 27 and lives 40 miles away and my son is 15 and more into mates than family at this stage in his life ..
Time spent in the hills on my mountain bike both alone and with the bunch of mates I have made through riding ..
Real Ale ..especially the first pint in a boozer after a ride..
Listening to music and "discovering" new bands ( mainly rock )..
Driving my car...
Living where I live ( N.W.Northumberland)
There are lots of other things which are nice ..but these are the things that readily spring to mind ..

Cheese and onion sandwiches and Derby chinaware,
fiddles and jigs, Woogie me dog, me aunty Vi having a swear
Taking me dad for a pint or two and a Sunday morning
stroll. Licorice pipes and baggy suits, Glenn Hoddle scoring a goal
Catching a pike and riding me bike,
old wooden wheels and a bowl of eels
That's what I like, That's what I like
Pie and mash in liquor and walking about in the rain.
Reading books, comical looks, pianos, tramps and trains
Old films on the telly and picking the kids up from school,
coal 'n' cockles and thunderstorms and plays on the wireless and all
Grandfather clocks and Coke and
brandy, fountain pens and the Beano & Dandy
That's what I like, That's what I like
Little pubs out in the country, mother of pearl and Barnet fare
The sound of a banjo,
barber shop singing and having a kip in the
chair, burnt toast and beer from the wood and old
Terry Thomas's teeth, Jerry 'n' Chet,
Cannon & Ball and banjo picking Bill Keith,
home baked loaves and wood burning
stoves and Shirley McLaine and Peticoat Lane.
That's what I like, That's what I like
Bubble and squeak and jumble sales,
Little Richard and Jerry Lee.
Bonfire nights, Southend lights and paddling in the sea
Polished brass and copper, Salvation army bands,
violins and old coach inns, and coloured elastic bands
Tea in the morning and winter begining,
Fishing rods, frogs and Spurs are winning
That's what I like, That's what I like
A day at the races, old Fender basses, going down hopping in Kent.
A new pair of braces, little kids faces, sleeping out under a tent
And waggons and chickens and picking blackberries and
swallows and sledges and Devon and cherries and haddock and trotters
and horses and nippers and cider and celery banjo and kippers
That's what I like, That's what I like

first run on some fresh snow, even if it's just a corner that no-one else has got to yet

also, on car free day, seeing roads covered in leaves.  It feels like the earth is winning - if only for a short time

Seeing my wife being happy & not in any discomfort.
Not being sick whilst fishing at sea.

Summer, Buddy Holly, the working folly
Good golly Miss Molly and boats
Hammersmith Palais, the Bolshoi Ballet
Jump back in the alley and nanny goats
18-wheeler Scammels, Domenecker camels
All other mammals plus equal votes
Seeing Piccadilly, Fanny Smith and Willy
Being rather silly, and porridge oats
A bit of grin and bear it, a bit of come and share it
You're welcome, we can spare it - yellow socks
Too short to be haughty, too nutty to be naughty
Going on 40 - no electric shocks
The juice of the carrot, the smile of the parrot
A little drop of claret - anything that rocks
Elvis and Scotty, days when I ain't spotty,
Sitting on the potty - curing smallpox

Its warm, windy, flat water and I’m going Windsurfing and the suns out.

That’ll do.
