Evening
I haven't had to go through Hereford for years, but the last couple of times it took about 45 minutes to get through south to north.
There was no work going on,just volume off traffic and traffic lights.
I have to go through there this Friday, probably about 3 or 4 in the afternoon.
Anyone know if its still the same?
Ta
There in august and it's a nightmare between new bridge and the football ground
Yup, the fact there's only really one bridge is always going to make traffic a pisser.
Where are you going from/to?
You could always take the Ross-on-Wye to Ledbury road and cut off left on the A417 (419?) towards Leominster. Depending on the above of course 8)
Still road works in the middle of the city on the a49, tailbacks most of the time if you're coming from the north (well, was all last week and a few weeks before).
Ive lived to the east or west of Hereford most of my life and travelled trough it many hundreds of times and never had much problem.
The other day, for some reason, I had to go from south to north for the first time ever and it was hell!
A417 is a bit of a hefty detour though.
Stoner, its only ever south to north I've had problems.
I'm coming from Blackwood to get to Ludlow. I've looked into going Brecon,Talgarth and across,or Ross,Ledbury. But to be honest, the extra mileage will be about the same time wise as crawling through Hereford.
And just to make it that bit more fun,I'll be towing the caravan.
It is hell ATM.
A49 north to south is taking 45 minutes to do 1 mile. South to north is a lot better. Probably 15 minutes. The cattle market redevelopment into a shopping centre and the removing of the traffic lights on the roundabout just south of the football ground on Edgar Street is causing all of the problems.
No other way round it within the city. Depends on where you are coming from and going to, but the suggestion by psling is a good one if you are passing through and do not want to visit.
OP. Cross posts. From Blackwood would be Heads of the Valleys / Abergavenny? As you said extra mileage to Ross would be negated anyway with crawling through Hereford.
Good luck.
Mmm, Blackwood to Ludlow... reckon you're going to have to bite the bullet and slog through Hereford 🙁
Via Talgarth wouldn't be too much fun towing and probably won't save any time.
Hopefully you'll be lucky and get past the Asda rbt and Edgar St in Hereford without too much trouble.
I've been through Hereford thousands of times and I don't think I've ever hit this evil traffic that people keep talking about. I have no idea why. Never taken me more than about 15 to get through.
detour via Madley, cross the Wye at Bridge sollers, past Credenhill (station road), join A4110 and follow to A44 (or go via Wigmore)
probably save about 10 mins the 1st time 25 the 2nd (when you know the road)
Traffic S to N has been progressively getting worse for years... no sign of any improvement until the bypass is built....(unlikely to be any time soon ... the saga of the bypass is longer than a STW megathread.....)
oops just read the bit about towing .... I've driven most of that route driving a Bedford TK and trailer...
so after Bridge Sollers I'd take the A438 towards Hereford, A480 back towards Credenhill then the A4103 and rejoin the A49
Generally it depends on what time of day you hit Hereford. 5 minute difference can mean +30 minutes to your journey. ATM it's particularly bad going north south along Edgar Street A49 due to the redevelopment of the cattle market. The removing of the traffic lights mean the inbred locals can't negotiate a roundabout that they have all driven around everyday for the last 30 years.
But then we don't like change round yer boy!
Thanks for the replies.I think I'll just take a chance and hope for the best through Hereford. If we take too long,I can always send Mrs Houndlegs into the caravan to get a brew on 😀
South to north shouldn't be too bad, good luck anyway
Wow, surprised to see so many people from Hereford.
Friday afternoons are terrible.
no sign of any improvement until the bypass is built....(
Well, there's half a bypass... Sort of... But the river got in the way.
Late afternoon south-to-north traffic was dire, thanks to A49 being the only big road across the river. Can't imagine the cattle market works are making it any better.
I'd be tempted to divert just south of hereford through clehonger/madley to get over the wye, then skirt around the north of hereford to rejoin the a49.
