Has anyone got an idea of whether I will need planning permission to build a bike jump in my back garden? I have looked on this site Building Regulations for help but it only seems to give information on conservatories and extensions. The dimensions of the ramp are 10 feet high by 8 feet wide, and the length of the whole thing is 25 feet. I will post some pics of it once it is complete but not sure if the same height rules apply for something like this as for a conservatory, (needs planning permission if over 3 metres high).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is it made from?

If it could be classed as temporary i.e. wood, then you may be ok if the neighbours don't complain.

If it is a BFO concrete blob then there is more chance of complaints and a visit....

If you contact the planning office and ask, chances are they'll insist you apply, as they are not smart enough to work out if it really does need planning on spec, and will automatically take the fall back position. Plus they will do what they can to take money off people to justify their miserable existence.

Have a look at the regulations for wood sheds/garages. If what you're building is smaller than a double garage you should be OK.

are you in a conservation area or curtlidge of a listed builing? If you are you probably will need planning

If not do a sketch ring planners and arrange a meeting to go and see them.

call your planning dept, they are friendly and helpfull these days, and be honest! planning laws are much more relaxed than they used to be. In my opinion you wont need PP 🙂

Ha ha ha! You obviously don't live in the same local council area as me!

Yes possibly, over 2.1m high or moving that amount of earth could constitute 'Engineering Works'.

I'd need to see a site plan to put it in context, how it will it affect your neighbours / attract an objection.

Do you intend to ship stuff in to build it or move stuff about on site etc/

And could you please confirm you are not a Listed Building or in a Conservation Area or Greenbelt / National Park or other designated area.

Incidentally I'm currently involved with a certain Noel Edmonds who's built a 'bund' (read big earth mound) in his garden - he thought he didn't need planning permission, he did, he applied and it's been refused. 😀
