Thought it would be useful to be able to transfer GPX tracks generated on my new Nokia 4.2 Android 10 phone to my Garmin Etrex30 when out on multiday trips.

I am reasonably computer savvy and currently transfer GPX tracks from laptop to Garmin using a USB cable.

Bought a new USB OTG cable, plug it into the Garmin first and get the message "The USB cable is connected to the wrong adapter" Nothing changes when I connect the other end to the phone (either on garmin or phone)

Phone is said to be OTG compliant, but when I search OTG in phone settings nothing comes up ?

All help appreciated !

Can't say for your phone but in earlier versiona of Android I've had to switch on "developer mode" to get OTG to work.

Once done, my Garmin appeared as two drives in the File Commander app.

Copying files was then just done in that app.

Many thanks scotroutes.

I have enabled developer options on the phone, but OTG doesn't appear anywhere.

Will keep Googling as well, but nothing that works for me has appeared yet.

I don't recall a OTG option, but there was something about USB Debugging.

On android you have to tap developer options 7 times to enable developer options, and then a separate menu allows usb debugging i think

Thanks both above. I had Developer Options and have now selected USB bugging but no change.

I am waiting for a different OTG USB adapter socket for my phone, and will see if that makes any difference.

I had looked into using my android phone to connect to a Garmin Etrex after a ride. We are often out of wifi on multiday rides. The etrex device doesnt have wireless connectivity but there is an app i found (cant recall at mo) but it will allow cable connection from a garmin to a phone.
Google is your friend here. I will see what i can discover and post further.

So a bit of progress...but not quite there yet.

I thought the original OTG cable I bought that was micro USB into phone, mini USB into Garmin Etrex 30 would be ok. But several blogs state that you do need the big female USB at your phone by using a cable or adapter, then connect the Garmin into that. This now works for me and I can see the Garmin and its folders/files in my Android file manager app. The App is called Files

I couldn't see a way of pasting the gpx track that was in Downloads on the phone into GPX folder on the Garmin which is how I usually do it from my laptop.

So I found another App called GPS transfer, this does put the downloaded track into the GPX folder on the Garmin, but it does not then appear in Track Manager on the Garmin. For information the track (and I am sure it is a track, not a route, was generated by the cycle.travel website and downloaded to my phone.

Scotroutes and Breninbeer. Many thanks for your suggestions that have helped me on my way, but those apps are either for tablets, as opposed to phones or do not support Garmin Etrex 30 units.

I can't help thinking that an Android file manager app that allowed me to paste the .gpx track file from the Android download folder to the Garmin GPX folder would solve it !!

Sportablet definitely worked on my old phone using the OTG cable.

There are other File Managers available for Android. I think you might have the Google one. Try File Commander.

Also - have you tried loading that GPX file on your Etrex as a Route - just to see if it's there?

File Manager +

if all you need is an app to look at file and move them around either within a device or to a connected device.

I think I used to use sportablet with my Edge500, but it sounds like you've already found that.

A bit of progress over the weekend...

Thanks to everone above, Stumpy as well now joined in...

I can now move a track generated by cycle.travel from my phone to the Etrex30 Garmin using OTG USB - but only with the Garmin in mass storage mode and doing copy/paste using an Android file manager which is a bit clumbsy, but it appears in Track Manager and on the map. Result !!

But like a dog with a bone, I would like to get one of the apps mentioned above to work as that would seem to be more straight forward when out for a few days and trying to do all this in my bivi

I can't see how to pay to get the sportablet apps above to function - it seems you need in app purchases to get the transfer feature, but I can't see how you pay ?

A further app called GPS Transfer also seems to work in Garmin mode. It says the Track has been transferred to the Garmin, but I can't see it in Track Manager or anywhere in the Garmin file system if I explore by connecting to my laptop.

I will post an update if I crack it !

Is this any help?

http://www.sportablet.com/blog/improved-support-for-garmin-etrex-foretrex-gpsmap-and-oregon

Normally with in-app purchases; the app asks you when you try to do something that requires payment.
So, for a photo-editor for example - you might try to apply a filter to a photo that isn't available free of charge. At the point you try to apply it, the app will tell you, you need to pay for that & lead you through the method for doing that.

Hope you get it sorted!
