My youngest is at Uni in Newcastle and needs a part time job to survive. She's got experience in restaurant/hotel waiting on etc, so owt in a cafe or pub would do. Anybody got any suggestions where she could try? Ta.

Going out on a limb here, but a hotel or a restaurant might be a good start?

Get a pile of CVs and covering intro letters, start at one end of town, drop one off at each establishment that looks promising till she reaches the other side of town.

Can't be worse than the last chap who did our building, he used to come in and lock himself in the toilet all day whilst he chatted on the phone then empty the bins and spray some air freshener around before knocking off early.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be an arse (beyond the "amusing" opening gambit). The point was that being proactive will be viewed favourably by many employers.

If she's mailbombed her CV about and not got a sniff, perhaps the question she needs to be asking isn't "where can I get a job?" but rather "what's wrong with my CV?".

Of course, it may well be that not many people are hiring. It's a bad time to be looking, when a lot of places will be winding down after Christmas.

My wife is an area retail manager and covers the north, a pet hate of CV bombing is an obviously generic CV handed out in bulk. Walk the high street look for vacancies and tailor a CV for the jobs she wants and address the envolopes properly, the cv should have no waffle or unrelated info. When handing it in dress smart and ask to see a manager/supervisor and have a chat and be bubbly. They will know it's a stepping stone while she studies but will want to know she will be honest, punctual and pull her weight, any previous exp is a bonus. There are hundreds of CV's coming in at the moment and you need to stand out, bear in mind the CVs will get skim read. It's also a time were not many are hiring and vacancies will have been filled by Xmas temps.

First impressions matter, CV not so much.

CVs are all filed but if someone stands out personality wise as soon as they walk through the door, that's enough to get them an interview/trial.

Yup. Newcastle is a tiny city, so I'd suggest taking herself around the kind of places she'd like to work in - there are loads of different 'types' of establishment - and asking to speak personally to the manager or whoever is responsible for recruitment. She could make up a contact card to leave with them if there are no immediate vacancies, or with another member of staff.

For some reason, the Baltic came into my mind. The café/restaurant on the ground floor there always seemed like a nice enough place to work, and they seem to have a similar staff turnover to most hospitality venues. Ask her to have a think about what sort of place she fancies; I'm sure the locals on here could point her in the those directions...

I worked p/t for a while in a pub last year, this seemed to be their recruitment policy.

1. Are they under 25 ?
2. Can they speak English ?
3. Are they good looking ?
4. Do they seem quite outgoing ?

If the applicant answered yes to all of those 4 questions, which applied equally to male and female applicants they got to the next stage.

But yes, she definitely needs to front up in person and speak to the manager. We were told to suss them out, and if they were clearly not eligible to the initial sift, we had no jobs going. If they passed, we told them to come back the next day to speak with one of the managers.

BTW - pub work is not for the faint hearted or sensitive. People are rude, drunk people even more so.

Are there any entertainment venues in Newcastle that she can get to? is the football stadium easy to get to (does she have transport?)

I mention this as I did event stewarding while at uni and it was a decent job. There'll be a few agencies that cover all the event venues/football grounds/race courses in the area and they are normally looking for people to work weekends/evenings for stewarding etc.

I really enjoyed it and worked at some great places - Wembley Stadium, White Hart Lane, Stamford Bridge, The Oval, Farnborough Air Show, Madjeski Stadium.
Might be something a bit different.

A friend had a brilliant job in the cafe at the Live Theatre when I lived up there. Decent pay, good hours, good group of people and lots of free events.

Still potentially worth looking into - the agency I worked for always had a minibus going to the venues from their offices....

The major venues (Metro Radio Arena and Wonga Park) are in town, so transport wouldn't be needed.

Newcastle is bursting with bars and restaurants at the mo. I'd be amazed if she couldn't find something just by having a walk around.

If she's at either of the Uni's in Newcastle then she's bang in the town centre so transport really shouldn't be a problem.
