I want to go and watch a Cup Final at Wembley. I live in NW England. My constraints are price and time taken. I'll need to get away sharpish as my son and I are both working the day after so no hanging about drinking etc.
Trains are (of course) too expensive.
There are coaches going down but
a. they set off from the club ground and I don't live near there so would have to drive there.
b. likely to be pretty slow.
c. not sure I want to be stuck with a load of pissed up ale cans all the way there and back.
Flying down. Way too expensive and time consuming at either end.
So that leaves driving there and back. I've done this before and used one of those site where you can book someone's drive to park on. That was ok but you are stuck near the stadium and have queues getting away after. I am considering driving to somewhere like Ruislip. Parking up and getting the tube in and out after.
Any better ideas/suggestions?
NB will be ignoring 'Wendyball' type snobbery comments.

Stanmore station is on the Jubilee line & runs right to Wembley Park which brings you out onto Olympic Way about a 5min walk from the Stadium.
There is a large car park right next door to Stanmore station.

And Stanmore is close to the M1/M25.

If you don't want to rely on the car park at the station, you could just look for one of those driveway parking locations, in that area instead.

I’ve done this before and used one of those site where you can book someone’s drive to park on

Last time we did that, we pulled onto the driveway 'belonging' to the person we had rented it from, and someone came out the front door pretty quickly, and pretty annoyed - "Not this sh*t again, move that car now or I'm calling the Police, and if you dont, it'll be blocked in when you come back".

Turns out its pretty easy to set yourself up on one of these 'park on my drive' sites and simply walk down your chosen street, cope the addresses down, claim to live at every single house and rent each one out.

On Cup Final day, near Wembley, thats quite a little earner. Caused some serious bother trying to find somewhere to park at short notice.

Do your own research¬

Trains are (of course) too expensive.

Even if booked well in advance?

c. not sure I want to be stuck with a load of pissed up ale cans all the way there and back.

Don't some clubs do family friendly coaches for this very reason?

When I drove down I parked at Mill Hill then got the tube. Was easy enough but spent the journey back stuck in traffic on the M1 next to a coach full of Doncaster fans, who'd beaten us.

As a Blackpool fan who has been many times to Wembley, I always drive from Chorley, M6, M42, M40 to Amersham. Park at the overground station and get the train in to Wembley Park which then gives you the fantastic walk down Wembley Way. 3 hour ish drive, and about 30 mins on the train. Warwick services are usually full of fans from any club heading from the North (for football anyway) and usually a good atmosphere there too.

Definitely check trains again, i was amazed how cheap it was to get from York to London on advance fares recently.

Thanks all. Some good suggestions there. Will weigh them all up.

I regularly use Stanmore to get in to central London. Usually loads of spaces but I suspect on a cup final day it’ll get busy early. But only a handful of stops to Wembley. But, it’s a narrow access road in and out on to a main road and a right turn to get to the M1 so I could see the mother of all queues getting out after a big game.

M40 park at Gerrards Cross get train in (Chiltern Railways). The overground station (called Wembley Stadium) is easy to get in and out of, much easier than the tube and closer to the stadium. The train might cost you a bit more but you can park near the station for free on a weekend. You could probably do the same from High Wycombe.

Make plans to stay over and phone in sick the next day. Or if they know where you're going a nice car breakdown should do it.
