I am re-rendering the front of our house. It's a wonky old cottage built out of a mix of brick, block and stone.Â
Before I get into the chipping off and rendering I need to do the flashing above the porch. It's been done previously with flashband tape and it's weathered and leaks. I want to re-do it with lead. The porch roof is tucked up really close the the sills of the upstairs windows, making it impossible to have the correct amount of upstand on the flashings. Unfortunately, I didn't forsee this issue when we had new windows fitted a couple of years ago....

So, what's the best way to tackle this? Just run the flashing along the full 9 metre length as high as I can (60mm ish?!!!) Or flash under the windows at 60, then do the rest at 150 with plenty of overlap either side of the windows? The main issue I have with that idea is that when I render it the bell cast bead will be around 120mm higher than the bottom of the windows.... and I'm concerned that I'll still get leaks through the flashing around the windows. Is it really that essential to have 150mm of upstand on a solid walled building?
For reference, the wall is south facing, and does catch some of the prevailing south-westerly winds.

I would say 60mm would be fine. Remove the render below the cut you make and fix a render thick piece of ply to the wall leaving a gap of say 18mm above it to the new edge of the render. Dress the lead over a plank edge so it goes over the top of the ply and up the back of the channel you've formed. making sure it doesn't poke back forward at the top. Fix with stainless screws and washers then fill with leadmate. Remember lead shouldn't have sections longer than a couple of metres as it will crack with the expansion & contraction.
The cheapskate way of just sticking it into a slot in the render won't work here as the render below the cut will probably fall off.
Thanks Chickenman, that gives me some confidence.Â
For clarity - we're chipping the old (cement) render off and re-doing in lime, so there's no danger of old render coming off cos it will already be long gone.
Where you suggest screwing it to the wall - is that just under the window? Or for the whole run? I'm thinking it will be more water proof if we chase&tuck where we can.Â
Edit - meant to say I've added a sketch of my interpretation of your suggestion, is that correct?
If ever a thread title didn't need a second sentence
Don't use long runs of lead. Sunshine will cause enough expansion to split the lead. Use lots of 1,5mtr sections with decent overlap. .Â
