If HR are present make sure they know that you were sacked by text whilst on holiday. Depending on how good they are, he may get a good dressing down for that.

Read the OPs responses......

He's manager & company owner, small family company.

There won't be an HR person and no one is going to be giving the owner/manager a dressing down.

Maybe also contact a local newspaper - they love stories like this and it may also add a bit of pain.

That sort of thing is also great for your employability, you know, the thing the OP probably needs to prioritise. But doing the right thing, sorting your life out and behaving like the better person is not really very stw.

Everything that perchypanther says. You're in a weak position at present so get out with what you can – particularly reputation and references. Revenge opportunities may well come later when you're in a stronger position.

Don't reply, play it cool and just breeze in on Monday as though everything is normal.

This is what I'd do. And buy him a present from your holiday too 🙂

+1. much of the advice here is basically 'try and guilt trip the manager' which won't help anyone and won't be particularly satisfying either.

Never mind revenge. Don't waste any more energy than you have to on this plonker. Move on and save your time & energy for your family and/or bikes.

Don't make a tit of yourself by going in to work as normal.
Stay on holiday for an extra week or two!

Just text back:

Ha ha nice one boss I love your sense of humour. As if you'd get rid of me before Jack who is doing your Mrs! Funny text though. See you Monday.

print the text off and staple as many copies around the company as possible

Do you have an HR department?

Does he have a boss?

forward the text to as many others in the company as you can, let them see how badly you are being treated...

I can arrange for everyone in your company to have the same SMS message that would appear to come from your bosses mobile if you want some fun.

Could've been slightly worse though. My mate got the 'not needed' thing 2 days before he went on holiday to Canada & needless to say it kind of spoiled his jollies a bit.
Turned out to be the best thing that ever happened in the long run though so chin up & good luck!

Almightydutch's response should be acted upon, brilliant!!

Guilt trip, no, make him feel awkward and inadequate as a human being, preferably in front of the rest of his team, yes.

Given OP has another role lined up, forwarding the text to the rest of the team's mobiles +wishing them the best then going for a long ride on Monday may be more satisfying.

Just give me the details and it will be done. If you could supply them all in E.164 format on .CSV that would make it even easier...sorry chuckling at IT Guy thread too

Don't be tempted to confuse what you WANT with what you NEED.

You want..... Justice, revenge and a validation of your righteous indignation at being treated so shabbily..... and you are right to want all of these things but the reality is that getting them won't provide you with what you actually NEED.

You need...... to maximise your chances of getting a new job in the same industry. Which means a reference and an honest assessment of why you didn't "fit".

You DON'T NEED...... Prospective employers hearing about how you threw a strop (no matter how well deserved) from your previous boss who is in the same industry and WILL eventually talk to each other.

You Dont need... new employers to remember you as "that guy from the paper who got sacked by text / and subsequently faked his own death / punched his boss / shat in a donut box etc". Not Cool

You don't need.. to have to explain in an interview why you'd prefer that they didn't contact your previous workplace for a reference. No interviewer wants to hear that.

From this point on it should be about the new job. The old one is gone, just make sure that you get what you NEED on the way out.

Best advice.

Burning bridges is never worth it, you might not want to work for him again but how about the people he knows or your former colleagues?

Personally, I'd be inclined to roll with Ernie Lynch's suggestion in his first post on the subject. And then Lanky****man's post just up there...

So did you go into work?

Did you go into work with "good morning!"s and feigning no knowledge of the text?

Did you go into work with "good morning!"s and a box of doughnuts, feigning no knowledge of the text?

Or did you go into work with a poo in a box of doughnuts for the boss?

I totally agree also that this IS the best advice of all on here. I feel for you and I'm angry about your t@*t of a boss, however you have to find a way to get into new work without having burnt bridge behind you.

I was going to advise you to tweet this message text and make it go viral shaming the company! On reflection this is terrible advice. Go with what panther has said.

Unfortunately my balls are not of the requisite size to roll up as if nothing has happened.

I'm just glad to be moving onto bigger & better things, & not having to put with my bosses daily racism & homophobia...

Do you need to use him as a reference? I would consider that before deciding what to reply with.

"Not quite worked out" isn't grounds for dismissal. If he is making you redundant then that's different but it makes it hard for them to replace you.

If you haven't had anything written in terms of performance or competence then I would be tempted to fight it a little, but doubt you will get very far.

Have you read ANYTHING written in the (more competent) of the posts on the preceeding 3 pages or are you just freestyling and making it up as you go along?

So....

A quick update, I found a new job after about 5 hours, doing pretty similar stuff. My boss has just been away on holiday for a couple of weeks leaving me in charge, handed him my overtime today, his response, I'll pay you time and a half for those hours and I'll double it for the extra stress you've been under whilst I was away...

Turns out I've found a good boss after 20 odd years of working..

How about a cheeky text to the old boss telling the above and thanking him for being a spineless toad.

I'm alway a bit wary of seeing these threads pop up after such a long time, but this one has turned out to be a real treat, glad it's worked out for you.
