Had a bit of an accident a couple of weeks ago. I've got a spare room which is just used for storage, with a dehumidifier in is as it suffers from damp a bit. A couple of weeks ago, the dehumidifier didn't cut out when the tank was full and it's leaked all over the carpet. I've mopped up what I can and left the dehumidifier running in the hope of dehydrating it, but the carpet's started going mouldy, there's a big patch of white 'blooms' on it.

Now, I'm not too fussed about replacing the carpet as it's only in a junk room (and can't afford it anyway), but obviously the mould needs treating. Is there something I can put on it to kill off the unpleasantness without destroying the carpet completely in the process?

Cheers.

Steam cleaner. The heat should kill the spores.

Its worth lifting the carper if you can to let its air underneath.

Carpet cleaner.. buy one there pretty damned good nowadays, or go hire a Rug Doctor from your local super market and clean the house...
Neighbours shared* vax is brilliant, and the in-laws bissell one was the one that made us realise you no longer needed to hire an industrial one to get decent results.

* she might not have realised it was shared when she bought it

Either a rug doctor or just pull it up and bin it.
first is £20-30
Second is FOC

Gosh, I never knew supermarkets did such things. I'll give 'em a ring tomorrow, nice one.

http://www.rugdoctor.co.uk/store-locator
(they want ID IIRC more than just a drivers license, best check before going to collect)

To be honest it might be worth checking your local Facebook pages. I got some local guy to clean my carpets properly. It cost a bit more than what a rug doctor and cleaning solution would cost. Did a spot on job too. FWIW he used the same type of cleaner HSS hire out, but he did all other kinds of pre-treatment stuff and the carpet was dry in a few hours. Rug Doctors drench them. Our communal area at work got rug doctored. The carpet went mouldy 😆

Oh FFS, really?

TBH, it's not worth "getting a man in." Apart from anything else there's so much shite in there you can only see about a quarter of the carpet (and that's an optimistic guess).

If you want to DIY go to HSS, that mini karcher cleaner does suck a lot of the moisture out.

I've used rug doctors to clean carpets when we've moved house on two occasions now, and not had any issues. As long as you follow the instructions carefully and allow the room to air/carpet to dry out I reckon you should be okay.

Think the last time we phoned up & booked over the phone, then went to collect the unit from the local big Tesco. We had a pin code & just collected it from a locker, so pretty simple. I've seen then for hire in The Range too.

Minor update,

I've just attacked it with a brush and a hoover and it's lifted a lot of it out. Pongs a bit though (-: I'm assuming it'll grow straight back unless I kill it though? *goes to google*
