I was wondering if anyone could help me find an app for my Father in Law.

He’s looking for an android app that will allow him to search for and locate UK grid references (BNG) on his phone then use the app to locate them using GPS.

He has northings/eastings data of some city boundary stones (just for historic interest) and is struggling to find some without help as several are in woodland or rough ground.

Is there anything out there that does this? Had a look but can’t seem to find anything that’s quite right.

Cheers.

I vaguely remember that the old Anquet PC mapping software had options for BNG. I know they have an Android App, so maybe worth a look.

Does it need to be an app? Plenty of websites should do it. Can you even put them into Google maps? Or something like this https://gridreferencefinder.com/

£18 p/a or so for the OS’s own maps is what I went for. Access via PC or Android/iOS and works well on all.

Maverick GPS Navigation on android will do it and it's free up to so many waypoints. The paid version isn't much either. You can cache OS 1:50k, 1:25k) and other maps layers and aerials free on it.

I've used it for years for both work and pleasure and have had no need to use anything else.

Try Backcountry Navigator (there's a 30 day trial option) which will give him full OS maps coverage down to 1:25k (he can save onto his phone memory the OS map area he wants or use his phone data).

There may be an easier way to do it but I've done it by creating a pin mark (long press on screen, press on pin mark option) then he needs to change the coordinates format to OSref (there's 3 options, numeric, six figure and xx eeeee nnnnn) and then he can overtype in the coordinates field the exact coordinates.

The OS maps app lets you search for grid refs.
