Fractions, and my brain is too old to remember this stuff.

1. What fraction is exactly halfway between 3/5 and 5/7 ?

2. 12500 visitors is an increase of a quarter over last year. How many visitors last year?

1 3/5 = 21/35 and 5/7 = 25/35 so exact halfway would be 23/35

2 10000

change both fractions to 35ths (21/35 and 25/35)

If last year was 100%, or 4 quarters; this year was 125% or 5 quarters

to find out what 4 quarters was, take this year, divide by 5 to get one quarter, then x4 (or x4/5)

(or divide by 125 and x 100)

I'd go round and show him the working out you did on that lump of 4 by 2 in the back of your van. ๐Ÿ™‚

If this hasn't already been done to death:
1) You're effectively finding the average, add the two togeather and divide by 2.
2) If he's done any algebra: 1.25x = 12500 so x = 12500รท1.25 =10000
Hope that helps!

Far from it; in all seriousness you probably use maths far more than most people!

You're clearly not *that* thick ๐Ÿ™‚

Those were the sort of real world maths questions that my wife who has an MSc in Teaching Maths struggles to get right (really).

I really meant that the OPP needed to know the technique for working out common denominators etc as well as the actual answer to the question.

We'll go for 10/10 for the answers and 6/10 for the other bit then ๐Ÿ™‚
