Mrs Rock has designed the garden which includes the removal of an existing round flagged patio and grass around it and laying slate style flags over a larger area.
I'm just thinking it might be beyond me, unless there is some good tips and advice out there.
So, is it on compacted soil then sand then mortar blobs or is there more preparation than that, hardcore base?
Any tips or hints would be appreciated!
Fully support the flags. Do not do the "dabs" of mortar. What is the underlying would like? Gravel and sand? Clay? Underlying stability effects your prep.
Grave and sand? Clay?

All you need to know here. Level and lay on sand unless you fancy installing a concrete bed. I'm a diy numpty but it's fairly straightforward and rewarding.
Don't under-estimate the weight of a flagstone, I've just close-laid 16 at 30kg+ each and would hire a handling thingy next time. It's okay until you're a couple of inches from the mortar bed, and then you realise that whatever you do your fingers are in the way

How hard it is depends on the size if the flags. Small is pretty easy to lay and level but big ones are really hard work. You'll need to scrape off the top level of soil, lay some mot, compact it then either a full bed of sand or a full bed of mortar. Use spirit level to get the fall and a string line to keep it all straight. Not technically hard but quite physical, although a pro will be neater and quicker.
