Because of the vast featureless nature of the plains and deserts which are it's natural habitat, what with it not being a jungle dwelling animal at all?
While I applaud Mr. Panther's interest in his fellow big cats, I feel duty bound to point out:
JUNGLE is a word in Hindi meaning "not an inhabited place". The word covers forest, wilderness, wold, waste, even the world (without human structures). The emphasis is on emptiness. Much of what is called jungle in India is steppe or nearly desert.
