Rode the roadbike on Sunday, big ride, big hills, trying to build things back up after an admittedly lazy winter. Nothing particularly untoward happened during the ride but I started to feel a sharp pain in my left ribs later that day.
Yesterday things were quite painful, until I stretched my arms above my head in a bid to loosen things up a bit. Then things became incredibly painful... Constant excruciating pain getting even worse with every intake of breath.
A bit of Googling suggests an intercostal muscle tear, has anyone else ever done this just breathing??
Don't think there's much point going to docs as I'm intolerant to anything stronger than Ibuprofen...
I'm off to Majorca in 4 weeks, any reassuring words?

Are you an ectomorph?

I just walked into a sunny room which stimulated a sneeze... I've not stopped crying yet... 😥

Thought this was going to be phone-related. Disappointed 😕

EDIT: Probably what you say, muscle tear. Best not to ignore left sided lung-height pain, though, especially if it starts radiating around your shoulder and arm.

Probably leaning slightly towards ecto, but more meso... Is that significant Qwerty?

Did something similar with a power breathe last year, dont think it was quite as bad by the sounds of it, sharp pain on deep breathing, went away in a week or 2.

It sounds like your cerebral view of yourself, doesn't match the physical reality/capability. 😉

Big ride, big hills… Wow. I'm impressed. Hey ho. 😐

Thankfully you'll never have to give birth in this life.

Intercostal's do hurt. And sneezing is particularly unpleasant. Presumably you're following ice pack and warm pack procedure?

I'm glad you're impressed, it's not usually so easy. My description of the ride was to give a bit of background in case anyone had anything helpful to offer. You clearly don't.

I'm an experienced cyclist, race at Cat3, just turned 40 and have spent the winter months mountain biking and doing flat-road work. Again, I hope you don't go all dewy-eyed at that revelation Alice, it's merely giving a bit of background. 🙄

I had something which sounds very similar last year.
I even started a thread on it here - http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/intercostal-abdominal-muscle-pain-after-hard-cycling
I put it down to killing myself on the road bike and then doing the same on the mountain bike the next day in a different position. It took a couple of weeks to go away as I recall with a bit of stretching but not much else - I just tolerated the pain for a while but didn't stop cycling.

Thanks for that Brakes, sounds identical... Reading some of the comments on there, i'm going to make an appointment to see a physio.

I do sometimes get sore intercostals after particularly tough races, but nothing like this. But it does tally with some of the observations that it can happen when trying to get back up to fitness...

Pneumothorax? I had one last year (spontaneous pneumothorax ie not caused by an injury or impact), symptoms pretty much as you describe except it was on the right side of my chest.

Thread I started on it here:

Crikey, I hope not... I've made an appointment to see a physio tomorrow morning. If I notice any more serious symptoms, I think I'd best get down to A&E!

Wouldn't worry too much if it is, I was back on the bike within a few days (GP just told me to avoid falling off as any impact in that area wouldn't be especially helpful!). Worth getting it checked out though.

Hey, knock yourself out shibby, did your ego get in the way of reading further down from my mild mocking to one of empathy? 😀 😉

We can both roll our eyes if you like? 🙄

My ego? Not sure how admitting to being injured by nothing more than fresh air would suggest ego... No, you just sounded like a patronising smart-arse. 🙄

I had that with 400 miles to go on a LEJOG. I recommend codeine and seated climbing.

I'm Codeine intolerant... Anything opiate-based... 🙁

Sadly Ibu/Para is as strong as I can go in the pain-killing department.

Yep. With some people I can be.

With others, I can be the epitome of understanding, congruence and unconditional positive regard 😀

Well, just got back from a very painful visit to the physio, it seems the problem might stem from a separated A/C joint 3 years ago.
Had a lot of massage to free up some of the spasming muscles on my back, neck and shoulder and ultrasound in a few places, plus so excruciating manipulation of my ribs at the spine.
Bad new is that I need to avoid getting out of breath for a minimum of 2 weeks and even then, build things back up slowly...
Looks like I'll be taking more of a DS roll in Majorca... 🙁
