I spend a few hours each week through the winter slowly freezing as I stand watching football.

Even layered with a decent jacket, a hat and scarf, I eventually start to feel cold, then uncomfortably cold. When I’m moving, walking or biking, I’m fine, but spectating doesn’t give you that same opportunity to keep warm.

Has anyone used a heated gilet? Do they work? Might I end up as a Joan of Arc tribute?

As ever TIA

Have you eaten your Ready Brek beforehand?

Do you have lined trews and/or long johns or just a normal pair of jeans?

My experience is that lined trousers with a down jacket and woolly hat are quite good for keeping warm.

I know **** all about heated clothing, sorry.

I had one when I had a motorbike. Can't remember the brand but it was bloody great. Imagine the tech has moved on since as well

No experience of heated gilets sorry. I understand your problem though. I eventually settled on a down jacket and merino long johns for the bottom half. Layer elsewhere accordingly for the day.

Milwaukee do a range - with heated hoodies and coats. (Not sure about gilets).
They seem to be popular amongst trade types.

Keis are the big name for motorcycle stuff But don't think they will run off a battery.

Thermal ski wear base layer leggings and top under your trousers and t shirt.

Horsey types often use heated clothing. I've no personal experience but Blazewear often get mentioned.

The Guardian did a feature on winter clothing and they recommended a heated gilet.
Guardian Article: https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2020/sep/30/denim-is-rubbish-for-keeping-you-warm-experts-tips-for-cold-weather-dressing
Here it is on Amazon for £36: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Freefa-Electric-Lightweight-Resistant-Touchscreen/dp/B07LG7CH3S/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=Heated%2BWaistcoat&qid=1601387913&sr=8-5&th=1&psc=1

NB it comes without a battery and requires a separate USB rechargeable powerbank. Advice from purchasers is to size up when ordering.

I have a Keis heated jacket for use on my motorbike and correct, it can't be run off a battery pack - it needs powering from the motorbike battery. Damn effective, though, but must use quite a bit of power.

Why would you want a heated Gilet, doesn’t make sense!

Having done the standing around thing at football pitches it’s warm boots, warm hat and gloves, thin layers and a windstopper

Feet hand and head most important

I have a Keis gilet for motorbiking, it's brilliant (and I feel the cold). Can be run off a battery pack. Expensive, but wouldn't be without it now

Could you not just tuck a hot water bottle down the back of your jumper?

Heated insoles are pretty cheap, they might give enough of a heat in your extremities to make you feel warmer all over too.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've resorted to merino baselayers at Cravem Cottage in the past as the wind whips off the Thames. However, the need to wear them in the car on the way there and back, makes them feel a bit over the top.

I've also layered, left nice air gaps, worn warm boots, worn gloves (not keen as clapping is muted), drunk Bovril at HT, and plenty of other efforts to stay warm. Hasn't worked - hence the question re heated gilets.

Will look at the suggestions and report back on how I find the one I get (for Xmas probably)

I have heated insoles for winter cycling as I always suffer from cold feet on the bike. They're great but the ones I have you have to take your shoes off to turn on and off. Just enough heat to stop toes going numb but not so much as to get soggy sweaty feet. Fancier ones with bluetooth controls are available. I think mine are branded as Warmerwear (or something similar).

While wearing an old thick pure wool jumper that's been washed many times and is near felt - You will melt.

I spend a few hours each week through the winter slowly freezing as I stand watching football.

I used to take my nephew to Hockey practice one evening a week, standing around by the side of an astro turf for an hour with the wind whipping through you at 1C was pretty unpleasant - I was cold wearing all my deep cold ski kit. He was fine, an hour of running around like a lunatic and wasn't cold at all...

Years ago, The North Face did a heated fleece with a Li-ion battery pack in one of the pockets. Obviously wasn't a big success as they only did it for one season.

Buy a proper jacket and stop being such a big girls blouse!

The idea that you need a heated gilet in a UK winter would be laughed at in just about every country at the same latitude across the world.

Shackleton would be revolving in his grave.

Hight denier tights. Cheap and amazingly warm. I used to ware them as a extra layer in the cold. Plus my legs looked fantastic.

I had a heated gilet when I used to tour on motorbikes, it was pretty useless really, same as the heated handgrips.
