We moved into a house with an ASHP that had been installed by previous owners in 2017. The unit itself works fine - it's not the most up-to-date unit I suppose, but it works. But. It's attached to a controller - more or less a timer that schedules when it comes on and goes off (yes, I know that's weird for a HP). There is also a thermostat. The problem is (are) that it sometimes obeys the thermostat and comes on when its cold and turns off when it's hot, and sometimes it doesn't - just stays on regardless. Likewise the timer - sometimes it obeys the timer, sometimes it just stays on. When that happens the only thing to do is to turn it off at the mains.
It seems to me that the controller and thermostat need replacing. The question is, who by? The system was installed by a firm in Essex (no idea why) and they are understandably reluctant to come to Northumberland for a small job. So if I need someone local, who should I be looking for? A company specialising in HP? A random heating engineer? A plumber? An electrician?
Any thoughts and suggestions would be very welcome, cos it's doing my head in considering it's probably a minor problem at the end of the day.
If you draw a blank then asking the guys at Think Energy in Hexham may be useful. Of course Northumberland is big and that may be a fair distance from you 😁
Thanks - Hexham is certainly closer than Essex (we're near Amble) đŸ™‚
Could be defrost cycle or pump overrun causing it to run on.
can you put a meter/volt stick on the timer/stat and diagnose whether its external controls or the ASHP?
theres various sensors in the heat pump, check they are in their pockets/pipe clips...
It’s normal for an ASHP to have a controller which can be set to on, off or timed and various temperature setting options. There will normally be different settings frost protection, setback temperature and a user input temperature.
You should be able to set if to constant on, off or timed.
Could it be running out with the timer on period to keep the space above the setback temperature?
You can adjust that in the control unit. I think mine is set to 12 for frost protection 14 or 16 for set back.
You may be able to find the manual for your controller on line.
Many thanks for the replies - sincerely appreciated!! I should have made clearer that the controller I described is actually separate from the HP's own control unit. Judging from the user manual (Honeywell ST6400C) it's not much more than a timer. The HP control unit (LG ThermaV) has more options but I think fewer than a modern unit - when the engineer came to service it he was very scathing about my attempts to "fine tune" the parameters (probably he was right :-). ).
Anyway - thanks again - I will try to contact someone to come look at it!
