I'd like a set of headphones mainly for use when flying but I may be after the moon on a stick! Is there anything that does the following?:
Ability to be plugged in to the in flight entertainment to listen to films, etc without any delay (I believe BT headphones struggle with this, hence wired), noise cancelling (if I just want to try and sleep) but don't cost the earth!
What price are you thinking? All the headphones we have in this house cover all that, and were 2 figures.
I guess the price I'm happy with depends on the abilities - less than £100 certainly. Are yours "proper" noise cancelling?
(can you tell I've not much idea about this subject!)
if I just want to try and sleep
What about wax ear plugs for the sleeping aspect?
Noise cancelling is fantastic for flights. Most of the ones I've looked at come with a wire option so you can plug in.
Older headphones can have a delay on bluetooth, but my newer (albeit high end) ones have none that I can notice.
My boy has some Anker Q20s that are good for the money. Q30s if you want to go higher, both well reviewed.
At the higher end of noise cancelling both Sony and Bose are excellent. Some 2nd hand Bose QC35 might be in budget?
I've been looking at similar, I think I'll keep my in ear NC Xiaomi Buds 3 Pro that came free with my phone, use wax ear plugs for sleeping and take whatever corded mobile phone headphone/mic thing we have laying around from surplus kit supplied with old phones.

Should be able to get a pair for just over £100.
My daughter just bought some Sony headphones that will do all of this. They were around £100, Bluetooth but also came with lead for 3.5mm jack. Noise cancelling works well. Audiophiles will no doubt sneer but they sound great to my ears
Active noise cancelling on flights is amazing. Much better than ear plugs.
For the sub £100 price point, you have to look for the deals. Brand depends on what's being cleared to make room for new models... they're a bit of a fashion item in terms of price/buying. We have Sennheiser and Phillips ones, just because they were on offer at the time. BT for phonecalls etc, wired with all cables and two prong adaptor for flights included... with a flight/bag case. Current deal looks like Sony my be worth looking at... SONY WH-CH720N looks to be reduced everywhere (£80)... doesn't look like it comes with the extras, but a cable and flight adapter will be pennies on ebay.
It's over your budget but my Sony xm3 came the the connectors and cables for flights.

Came to say Anker Q20 or Q30 but someone beat me to it. I have both and only replaced the Q20s after years of use mon-fri 9-5 for conf calling.
The NC is better on the Q30 which is key for flights and they also come with a case.
Q20 are £50 on amazon, Q30 are £80.
Both com with 3.5mm cables for inflight use. Not seen a dual 3.5mm socket on a plane for years but they can be had for buttons off ebay.
For quiet time on planes i'd also recommend a brown noise app on your phone and listen to that
The Q30 seem to get good reviews and are a better price given I've got to get 2 pairs!

Emirates system needs an adapter.
Sennheiser https://www.sennheiser-hearing.com/en-UK/p/hd-458bt-refurbished/cl81sb4gp98p40buljeqjbjri/
or Soundcore Q30 currently on offer for around £65
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Soundcore-Cancelling-Headphones-Multiple-Bluetooth-Black/dp/B08HMWZBXC

I've had these unknown brand SRythm NC75 for a couple of years and the NC on flights is bliss. Sound quality is also good as is battery life. Microphone for voice calls not so good. I got them for under £50.
Emirates system needs an adapter
I was on an Emirates A380 a few weeks ago and plugged my Sony XM4s into the onboard stuff without an adapter. It had the two sockets but worked fine in just the one. I presume that meant I didn't have stereo sound but I didn't notice. It also worked fine with the adapter that came with the headphones.
For the few quid I'd get one (if the headphones OP gets don't come with one) just in case. It would be very annoying to get the headphones specifically for a flight and then not be able to use them for the sake of a £1 adapter!
OP: I'd go for the Ankers, I'm really happy with the Bluetooth speaker and in ear buds of theirs that we've got.
I think this was done mid last year (specifically for flights)
I'd search, but STW.....
I have XM3's too though, which are great - not used them in-flight though
Thanks all.
Anker 2 x Q30's bought.... we'll see if MrsSB is keen.
Update:
The Q30's are great - they made a big difference to our flights last week. I can only imagine how much better the noise cancelling on a set of Sony [for example] headphones costing more than double would be!
I misread the thread title - I thought it said "Headphones for Fights!"
That sounded interesting so imagine my disappointment when I clicked on it and realised it was about flights instead...
xm4 here - -though I've typically used a general set of in ear pods (huawei) if listening or watching my devices - or the airline ones if wanting to watch a film onboard.
generally i use flights to sleep though tbh, eat on the ground, sleep in the air
American airlines hand out noise cancelling 'phones for the duration of the flight -- I think Icelandic do as well - just change air-service 😉
